Now on a hill in Brecon is Crawshay's ruined house
And it blackens out the green of the valley
And on the battered grave is the epitaph they gave
It stands there, god forgive him!
    Forgive him! forgive him!
And all who rot in hell with him
And oh the ironmasters, they always get their way.

Sad that, a lot of nights spent in company of the men

  • I saw them a few times including a great night at the Fridge with the Pouges and Boothill Foot Tappers. I think it was for the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign.

Just been going through a list of gigs I went to in the 80s and they featured 4 or 5 times, a top band who knew how to entertain. One of those gigs was at the Cellar Bar in Calderwood St.
RIP Cush. Can't quite believe that Night of a Thousand Candles came out 35 years ago.

Loved Stefan’s vocal on Green Fields of France and was hooked from then on.

Did the band play the Last Post and chorus?
Die the pipes play the flowers of the forest?

    Rest in Peace Cush.

I’d known it sung by The Fureys & Davey Arthur a few years before and have a cousin who always sings it beautifully at family gatherings. Great lyrics and meaning.

Although I have never heard of them it's still a shame.

It’s an incredibly sad song and yet uplifting too in its way ... always gets to me when I hear it

Thank you for your comments, chaps.
I hope that The Men They Couldn't Hang will continue.
John Baine, aka Attila the Stockbroker, a friend of the band and an acquaintance of mine, performed a half-hour of thoughts and music in memory of Cush on Friday night.
