    308-9

Rain stopped play and I would think that will be that.

But it isn't and they are back out again. Quite why I really don't know.

They were. And ended up 29 short.

Gilchrist the pick of the bowlers with 4-74.

Cummins' woes continue and he finishes with 0-77 meaning his total contribution this season of 5-446

More players missing for the Sussex derby:

Matt Milnes (ankle), Heino Kuhn (calf), Harry Podmore (side strain), Tim Groenewald (knee), and Imran Qayyum (shoulder) remain unavailable for this match.

Joe Denly is currently taking some time away from the game for personal reasons and is therefore unavailable for our next match. He is replaced in our 13-strong squad by Hamid Qadri.

Grant Stewart will travel to Hove with the First XI squad to continue his rehabilitation from an abdomen injury but is not available for selection at this time.

Vice-Captain Daniel Bell-Drummond continues to skipper the side as Club Captain Sam Billings remains in quarantine after returning from India late last week.

Denly's form might well have been affected by the reasons for the absence referred to above. Wish him well and hope he is back soon enough. At least Billings should be available for the next match because the 13 named are the only fit red ball contracted players we have left from the entire squad.

One assumes that the 10 remaining from the last game will play and that the 11th place is a choice between a debut for Muyeye, an extra spin option (Qadri) or another fast bowler (Klaassen).

Archer and the Sussex Ollie Robinson will be licking their lips at the prospect of bowling at our top order

At least we can reply with Milnes, Podmore, Stewart, Stevo

we will be 350-4 at close of play

I shouldn't worry too much. If Kent can cobble together about 90, that should be enough to get a first innings lead. Interestingly, six of the Sussex squad were not even born when Stevens made his first class debut.

I admire your optimism but I would have to be a massive seller at that price! Based on the average of our batsmen this season and given the likely team, I'm going for 244 all out:

    DBD 24.00
    Cox 31.75
    Crawley 32.25
    Leaning 18.50
    Robinson 38.28
    O'Riordan 40.00
    Stevens 32.85
    Gilchrist 9.00
    Qadri N/A
    Cummins16.16
    Quinn 1.00

The other aspect of this side is the average age - under 26 - which is young enough. But if we leave Stevens out of the calculation it drops to 24 as we have six players in the side in the 20-23 age range

Kent Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of Afghanistan International spinner Qais Ahmad for the entire Vitality Blast and two LV= Insurance County Championship matches, subject to regulatory approval.
Ahmad has established himself as an international standard T20 leg-spinner, having already featured in: Afghanistan Premier League (APL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
The 20-year-old has a T20 career bowling average of just 21.28, an economy rate of 7.5 and has taken 77 wickets in 67 matches in the format. Ahmad also has a T20 batting strike-rate of 126.46 and has an unbeaten T20 half century to his name.

Sussex won the toss and chose to field. The one change is that 19 year old Muyeye comes in for Denly to make his debut. The irony is that he went to Eastbourne School and previously played for the Sussex Academy and 2s sides.

You know you're unlucky when you find out that the last time that Archer played in the County Championship was in 2018!

    35-2 off 16

    Cox 7* (43)
    Leaning 15* (26)

These two hoping to replicate their unbeaten record stand of 423 against Sussex

Good from an England bowling point of view, not so good from the batting point of view...

    69-2 off 29 at lunch

Cox 23* (79) and Leaning 29* (68) have really dug in well to see off Archer and Robinson - for now at least
