Computer Anti virus

Anyone know about Digital River Ireland ? My Kaspersky anti virus is about to expire. Previously I have received it free as a Barclays customer but that "gift" is no longer available but I can buy a renewal from Kaspersky for £4.99. So I go through the procedure & opt to pay by paypal & after logging in a pop up from Digital River appears & says to continue I must give approval for them to take payment from my paypal account for any "further services". Fearing a scam I quickly logged out & changed my password before searching the web for info. Sure enough some people appear to have been scammed & paypal refuse to reimburse them because I guess "the scammed" gave permission for these people to help themselves. On further investigation it seems that Digital River are agents for Kaspersky & AVG (& possibly more) & so it seems unlikely that they would scam anyone ? Does anyone have any experience of dealing with this company ?

Does anyone use TotalAV anti virus ? Any views on it please. I'm running the trial version but I'm reading online that it's difficult to use ? i just want to install & let it do it's work not have to worry about using it ? Not really sure what you would have to do once installed other than run scans etc. One thing I have noticed is it's advertised as free but there's quite a few add ons that you have to pay for. I don't mind paying if I need to but there seems so many advertised as free, anyone have any recommendations as to using free anti virus ? Thanks
  • Digital River are a payment processor. Kaspersky use then for subscription renewals. It's not likely you've been conned.

Well, apart from the fact you're still paying for useless antivirus...

Use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes. Both free, and Windows Defender is about as good an AV as any of the other traditional antivirus programs, and Malwarebytes free will protect you from most malware

    Also, stop looking at porn

Thanks Leroy, never had a problem with Kaspersky & used to get the full AV free from Barclays but have read of people having money deducted from paypal accounts from Digital river without knowing what for.

Huh ? I thought AV was intended for porn watchers

Malwarebytes is not an anti virus, it tracks and destroys Malware as the name suggests. You need an anti virus programme on your PC to run alongside Malwarebytes.

Used the free version of Avast for years with no issues. Might as well add malwarebytes as a bit extra.

I never said any different. Merely confirming the point from Leroy that it protects you from most malware.
  • My Mum was stupid enough to pay for AVG antivirus after using the free version. Very unimpressed with extra paid for features. I'm sticking with the free version. Her bank statement showed Digital River Ireland also, if I remember correctly!

I still use ad aware from Lavasoft. Not had a problem except with the update process. Have to uninstall manually and re-load

Sorry SM I have just re-read your post and see where you were coming from. At first glance I read it you recommended Malwarebytes only, without an anti virus.

Anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in his cell at a Barcelona prison.

Just hours earlier, Spain's National Court had agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges.

The Spanish Justice Department said in a statement that "everything indicates" Mr McAfee took his own life.

A controversial figure, his company released the first commercial anti-virus software and helped spark a multi-billion dollar industry.

Guy was fucking mental but a complete character RIP. Married a prostitute and would constantly tweet about how he was on the run, and was hiring decoys. Crazy

Total nutcase. Killed one bloke, probably killed at least one more. Also did nothing of any note in the security field other than rip off a former partner's code back in the day then parlay it into an IPO for 'his' company, whilst somehiw maintaining the legend that he was some kind of security genius.

    Lunatic 🤣
