My father wasn't a gambler. For some inexplicable reason before one game, he offered me a whole two shillings if I could predict the result of Charlton's game against Sunderland and sixpence if I got the right number of goals. I knew that Sunderland would be a tough game, so I wisely chose a close result. I opted for 1-0 to Charlton. At half-time, it was still 0-0. As Edwards (or whoever) rounded the keeper, I gave a knowing look at my Dad as I waited for the net to bulge. I threw my arms in the air only to realise that the ball had gone into the side netting. I was gutted. It ended 0-0, of course. I didn't speak as we walked homewards up Church Lane and Wellington Gardens.

That game would be Dec 7th 1963. I thought it was Roy Matthews who missed . Eddie Firmani would have scored but for a superb backwards and sideways leap to is right post by the bar. A terrific save. A week later we drew at home 2-2 with Southampton.
