John Pender - diagnosed with MND

Very sad.
Think he was one of around 9 signings Lennie made along with Mark Reid, John Humphrey & George Shipley that got us promotion the season we left the valley.4 -
That's really sad. I read one study that said footballers were six times more likely to develop MND than the average population and in the case of John, as a centre back who would have been habitually heading a football, he would have been even more prone to doing so. John wasn't with us for that long but still made an impression.

Sad news.
He was a very important member of that 85/86 promotion team. He was also part of promotion winning teams for Wolves and Burnley.0 -
Very sad, my father in law died of MND nearly 30 years ago now, horrible disease.3

Yeah lost my Grandad to the disease almost 20-years agoAFKABartram said:Very sad, my father in law died of MND nearly 30 years ago now, horrible disease.
I'd never even heard of it till then, and always felt it never got the exposure like other illnesses.
You're now hearing of more and more people getting it, not exactly the exposure I meant
Hope he's able to enjoy as much of life that he can for the remainder of his days2 -
I have a friend who is going through this now, really awful to see, wish John all the best.2

Lost my younger brother at just 44 in August to this bastard disease. No real point in wishing him luck as there is no cure. It’s a death sentence. The only hope is that it is quicker than most and the undignified suffering towards the end is kept to a minimum

Excellent player.
Can only wish him and his family the best at this awful time.1 -
Arrived from Wolves with John Humphrey. Both top quality.
This appeal deserves our support.1 -
Awful news. Pender had the biggest thighs I’ve ever seen on a footballer. Very important player for us.1

As for John Pender what can one say, a truly awful condition and reading that newspaper report he is in its very advanced stages.
Good luck with your journey John, you were a fine player and Charlton fans will only have good memories of you and your time spent with us.8 -

Awful news.
The government have just pledged 50million over a few years to continue research into finding a cure. Thanks to high profile cases such as Dody Weir & Rob Burrow it been given a real boost to try and get the publicity needed.
Fingers crossed they make a breakthrough 🙏🏻❤️5 -
MND is a frightening disease because not only does it get progressively worse but it will be shocking for close family and friends who feel helpless as the loved one's body stops functioning and the decline which results.
Doddie Weir and Joost Van Westheizen are two high profile ex rugby players who have MND and the ex Footballer Stephen Darby who is the husband of the England's woman captain Steph Houghton.
Like others on CL, I had a brush with *cancer a couple of years ago but once you get your brain in gear and realize the odds are in your favour (hopefully) then the treatment starts and it stops being life threating even if it is life changing for body and mind.
Meeting folk at the Royal Marsden Sutton and also Chelsea is humbling and learning to listen (not easy for me!) to Cancer patients with stage 4 yet being stoic and telling stories of the past and desperately hoping they have stories to tell of the future.
MND is a Bastard, and I wish John Pender, his family and carers good spirit as we know the outcome until there is another breakthrough with medical science.
*Thursday is the two year check up so blood test results will be known and then listen to Cafc next full time Manager JJ on CAST in the evening; It will be a good day.

Horrible news.1
-
There now seems to be little doubt that repeated blows to the head whilst playing games, especially football, rugby and boxing can lead to neurological problems in later life for some people. A sad state of affairs but little can be done unless there are radical changes to the way the above mentioned sports are carried out0

Such sad news, remember John as one of our best defenders in the promotion season at Selhurst.
Was choked when he left. Hope by some miracle he can beat this awful disease.0 -
John Pender has just been on “ Garden Rescue “ with Charlie Dimmock. She was creating a wheelchair friendly garden for him and his wife.19
