Thoroughly enjoyable evening at our second home tonight, in a balmy 11 degrees Centigrade !
Villa looked very decent - full of fast, skillful young men ( the sort I liked 50 odd years ago!)
But the side JJ put out coped exceptionally well on the whole & managed to stop the opposition running away with the game. Our pen came soon after their equaliser & at a very opportune time IMO as they were forced to come from behind once again.
Watson's old head & expertise in particular certainly helped the younger players tonight.
Really pleased to see Jayden back & showing what he's capable of, albeit against an U21 side.
Probably the best performance we've seen from Charlie Kirk which is encouraging.
But our own young guns were impressive, especially the speed & determination shown by Corey & Mason ...The latter certainly knows where the goal is ! And Deji competent as ever in defence.
All in all a good performance and another notch in JJ's managerial belt.

I know the whole reason for the kids to be in the competition is for THEM to gain experience in the Senior Game - But given how the clubs have demanded B team access to the EFL, it would be nice if they made an effort to actually advertise these games.

I think the ref has gone with a foul for dangerous play there. But wasn't really reckless.

Mason’s goal was so classy. You don’t expect that sort of instant finish at this level.Downside (there always seems to be one) is that the coverage of the goal will get seen by endless flippin’ scouts, agents, coaches, managers and directors of football all over the flippin’ country. Shudder.Really good win, btw. Shows why a rubbish tournament like this actually has its uses on occasions. Players like Watson need a runout (did well) and others like Henry get a chance to show what they can do. Unfortunately poor old Morgan was disappointing again, apart from a couple of good passes and a good free kick.3

I know some big hitters on here have slagged off the Papa John's but from a selfish Cafc point of view it's been important for some young players and even senior players to get game time and for Burstow to make that switch from boys to men's football and realize that the fitness levels increase again as well as the intensity. I know we were playing against an u21 team but the cramping that Mason has suffered reminds me of the young Andy Murray who at 17 and 18 suffered with cramp until his team could work on it with a special fitness regime including diet and strength work and try to control the adrenaline rush which all adds to the body not lasting the full 90 minutes on in tennis 4 hours or so in the slams.
Pleased that Bakrin had a good game as when I watched him and Elerewe in tandem last season on Charlton TV in a couple of the U18 matches I thought they were clones of each other and I couldn't tell them apart with the long distance camera. Both looked raw and talented last season and good to see that both are progressing together. With Pearce becoming more of a coach and Inniss not able to ever stay fit over the last 8 years of his stop start career then Deji, Bakrin and Lavelle plus a new CB will be needed if Famewo doesn't sign for Cafc.4 -
Enjoying this cup a lot more this year and seeing it for what it is: a good opportunity for our young lads to get some games against so better quality opposition. Not only that but a good way for our out-of-favour players to get some minutes and prove themselves and our plethora of injured players to get some time into their legs.
It is not surprising that we are getting more into it this year, just look at the difference in the way we approach the games. Jacko and Nigel both appreciated the competition for what it is and as Jacko says - he wants to win every game. Contrast that to Bowyer's opinion on the competition:

If the manager is saying that, then it is probably, as a player and fan, a lot harder to get yourself up for the games. Appreciated that Lee was suffering an injury crisis and we have a much bigger squad now but it has to rub off on them.

While I think our attitude to cup competitions under Bowyer was regrettable, in reality we went with small squad back in the Roland days, and didn't have enough depth to put out a decent side in cup matches as well

I mentioned Burstow to him recently and asked if he had heard of him. He laughed and said all the big boys were well aware of him and he was probably already on the radar of a number.
You really don't have to worry that a goal scored on charlton TV in a PJT brings Burstow to the big boys' attention!9 -
Arter was chasing shadows for the entire second half. His natural skill saw him able to distribute short passes effectively in the first half when he wasn't slipping over unchallenged or scuffing corners into the ground. He has gone as a viable first-team footballer, completely gone. If we have to use him in the league we are stuffed. He will retire at the end of his Forest contract, guaranteed, unless a National League (or lower) team decides to help him out.HandG said:
