The Poke did one of their collections of Twitter responses for Gate-gate. It being Ireland, and the lorry being from a company that provides ecclesiastical supplies, there were one or two Father Ted jokes. Of course, I should point out that reversing a lorry into an embassy gate is not a very good idea. An embassy counts as the soil of the country the embassy is for, right? So where does that actually begin, is it on the outside of the wall, or the inside? If you ram the gates of the Russian embassy, are the gates in Ireland or Russia? If it's Russia then what offenses have been committed in Ireland? Technically is the course of events:
- Driving along in Ireland, not endangering anyone, sticking to the speed limits
- Enter Russia and immediately hit an obstacle
- Immediately return to Ireland
Could the Irish government rightfully say that if the Russians want anything done then they're going to have to apply to extradite the driver, which legally the Irish government wouldn't be able to do if they didn't believe he'd get a fair trial in Russia.
