  • Fully expecting most people to be underwhelmed by this but he’s clearly done a good job at Swindon. At least we can press ahead with plans to get players in now. Certainly 1 or 2 at Swindon I’d be taking a look at.

Garner began coaching at a young age following a serious injury with the original motivation to coach being he didn't feel young players were being coached well enough technically and tactically. Garner was also inspired by Terry Venables who "stood out from anything I had experienced previously".

In 2018 Garner was reported to have turned down the opportunity to become manager of Bradford City due to a lack of assurances over control of the team.

And in December 2018 former Bristol Rovers, Southampton, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and England player Rickie Lambert described Garner as "very organised, but imaginative, and had a great understanding of players" when suggesting him as the ideal candidate for the manager job at Bristol Rovers.

At the time of Garner's appointment (at Swindon), the club only had seven players, Garner's newly implemented transfer policy focusing on the signings of younger players. Despite this difficult start to his time at the club, Garner guided Swindon to the play-offs in his first season in charge, finishing the season in sixth place.

    Seems fine.

Was really hoping Beale or Taylor.  As in Taylor who got his low budget side promoted from League 2.  We're getting a chap who has failed to get (a big budget?) side up from League 2.

Josh Davison key striker next term?

    Massively underwhelmed.

Hope this is part of some masterplan and we will be whelmed by start of the season with the squad in place.

I'll admit, despite not seeing any Swindon or knowing much outside of this thread about Garner, it is a bit underwhelming compared to Beale, Taylor and even Moris given what's been said about them.

    But!

He is supposed to play a high press to beat down the low block with attacking football so hopefully we get to see some clear development and a "style".

Edit: after reading the one Swindon fans view, maybe it'll take  a little while to get there... But as long as we do..

Not defending this appointment but context is important. Swindon appointed Garner in late July and they signed more than 10 players in August alone.

Reported to have turned down the offer to be the Bradford City manager in 2018 ...from wiki:

In 2018 Garner was reported to have turned down the opportunity to become manager of Bradford City due to a lack of assurances over control of the team
  • My guess is he was the only candidate not to insist on control over transfers.

What on earth is he playing at. I wonder if people will continue to worship the ground that Sandgaard walks on after this appointment, absolutely bizarre.

Josh Davison likely. No doubt Sandgaard will try and sign him not knowing he’s already ours.

We've swapped Johnnie Jackson plus compensation (to both parties) for Ben Garner.

I've been waiting for us to rival the business acumen shown by re-signing Aneke on a 3.5 year deal for £300k six months after he left on a free. We've only gone and topped it.

An appointment to get everyone excited before the new season. He had a free hit with bringing in an exciting appointment and it ain’t it. Lose money by the bucket load why not chuck a few quid at an appointment that gets the fans up for it.

    Please prove me wrong ffs.

I will say Swindon impressed me last season when I watched them, played good attacking football. They played Forest Green Rovers off the park away from home. They looked good against City in FA cup, although City’s class showed.
I want to get out of this league! How did Swindon get on
    this year?

If true, I really don't mind the appointment, agree or disagree but Thomas has a model in his head which is mainly come from bumming up to Danish CEO at Brentford as far as can tell which is basically he wants to play a set way and will only employ managers around that way. Clearly this is the only candidate which came in line with that way of thinking
