Have to admit the appointment does not excite me at all, especially compared to the other names that have been rumoured.

However sounds like the job he did at Swindon was exceptional. To get them competitive and playing the sort of football they did play from where they were at the beginning of the season is no mean feat at all.

Also if you read a little about him he clearly is well thought of by many people working in the game.

So as ever, people are very much entitled to their opinion, but I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get behind him. People are more than happy to say give it to JJ or to Euell based on pretty much the only reason they are club legends - where as someone like Garner has actually at least got some experience of being successful and playing successful football as a manager.

I’m not sure this is going to work well, and would love to know what has convinced Thomas (he’s cheap and compliant?) really want to be wrong, but am yet to be convinced, will this fella really attract players, or drag us into league 2?

How are you lot writing him off before his even been confirmed? He took a team with seven players when he arrived, to the play offs. He has experience with youngsters, working with the youngsters at palace who are now in the prem. We are in league 1, what are you expecting, Pep or Klopp? Wake up, we ain’t very good, and this is what level we are at.

    Another ex-Palace wanker.

F**k off Ben and f**k off Thomas
  • No doubt Garner is part of the goal for us to be a premiership team and get into Europe. Sangard seems to be a cross between Southall and Roland. Full of p**s and wind and total basket case.
I would love to know who is advising him and what the interview proses is. We are knackered

McKirdy and their right back at the end of the season (Egbo?) looked decent, but I am severely underwhelmed by this

Ben fucking Garner.  Nothing against him & really hope he does well, but that's seriously underwhelming & so disappointing
I would argue that is something against him…
  • None of us can possibly know what’s going to happen. Assuming we all WANT him to succeed then we should accept what we have no control over and support him.

This HAS to be the position. Get behind the manager and squad that is assembled.  No other alternative.

Fuck me, that is one underwhelming appointment. May as well of kept JJ.

This guy was sacked by Bristol Rovers and had a half decent season at Swindon in L2, we seriously saying there wasn't anyone better available?

Ben Garner actually ticks a lot of boxes.

"he's a phenomenal person. He's a top, top coach, his attention to detail is unreal and he sees things that we don't see. He's a class act all around".

Very much focused on developing young players.  Similar back ground to Beale in that he has a lot of coaching experience despite being quite young.

Knows the area as well so would pass the sat nav test.

  • I bet Garner can hardly believe his luck that he got the head coach job at as big a club as Charlton.
Anyway he might just be the next Lennie Lawrence, so good luck to him. I remain sceptical however.

Wow. Might be wrong but does this sound like the top choices turned us down and Garner was lower down the list?
Perhaps Taylor and Beale couldn’t live with TS and MS being involved. I dunno.
Good luck to BG. As least he’s being allowed to bring in his own backroom staff.

I don’t know what to think 🤔, for now, I’m out.
  • Would have loved Beale but I’m gonna get behind this fella now. You never know it might just work out.

Some people on here need a lay down.

Young, progressive and attack minded coach coming in. Will he succeed? No idea, but writing him off before he steps through the door is weird.
    Meaning unique?

He got the boot from Bristol Rovers and couldn’t even get Swindon out of League two, can hardly see the season ticket sales going through the roof. This was the opportunity for Sangard to make a statement and hires a bloke from a team in the lowest league

    Happy if he signs McKirdy

Not happy if he plays Davison.

We’ve faffed around for weeks and ended up with a league 2 manager who couldn’t achieve promotion from league 2, we need a good start to the season, or the fans will get on his back.
  • Seems like he's gonna have to do a lot to Garner support from the Valley faithful

Context around his season at Swindon is important. They had half a dozen senior players in late July and made it into the playoffs.

His win percentage at Bristol Rovers was poor.

Would also have loved Beale, but don’t think he was ready to be manage yet!

Ben garner, I’ll leave judgement until he has a few months in the role! Something must have impressed!

Let’s give him a chance- no Charlton relations, and hopefully will have a new style of play!

    I know little about him.
Anyway whoever it was going to be, I will first and foremost judge them by results.
If at the same time he adds value to Albie Morgan as a significant player for us then it will be impressive alongside the consistent accumulation of points. I choose Albie as a good example of a player that if reports are true Ben Garner ought to be able to improve. Let's see.
Either way I am glad somebody is in, hopefully here on business, so let's get to work.
