@oohaahmortimer it's not about being content with league one, it's about being realistic.
After 14 years at this level, surely you get our target is to get out of this league, but we aren't the big name club we were. In our season in the championship with Bowyer it was clear we were seen by most as minnows.
Let's give Garner a chance if he is our man to achieve that promotion.3 -

What a joke....... sacked Jackson for this........ I really give up. All will have been done on a spreadsheet, just like RD he'll never learn, too pig/big headed.
But the same mistakes are being made time and time again, players bought on stats, now managers.
But despite Swindon being number 1 in almost every stat last season, they weren't top in the one that matters - promotion.......So a manager fail to get one off the best squads in league two out of the division, so we'll give him a go at getting us out of league one with in a relative terms arguably a worse squad...... Swindon only just made the playoffs by a point.3 -

If Swindon did have the best, or one of the best, squad in the divison the guy is a genius. They have 7 players on the first day of preason and were on the verg of being wound up.
MK Dons had similar stats and didn't get promoted and there would have been a wankfest if we got their manager...........
Much like players stats are a small part, do they fit in, right temperament, are they 'Charlton' - all those questions a Cubs and a Powell would look at as well as stats.
Yer Swindon had such a poor squad by the end of August they were 4th.

I'd say he's ruling himself in !3

If it was just about improving players JJ wouldn't have lost his Job:
Dobson, CBT and Clare.
It's about improving the team.
It's a team sport and it's about relationships all over the park and being as strong as your weakest link.
If its Ben he will need to be sheltered from the noise from damaged fans garnered over the last decade.
Some great coaches in the lower divisions.1 -
If true, pretty underwhelmed. However, have to get behind the fella and wish him good luck - he’s going to need it.1

“It’s more paper talk, bookies are putting two and two together in relation to what they see as a former player that’s had a bit of success..."
So he was never here for a chat after all then....?0 -
Joey Barton was scathing of Garner's time at Bristol Rovers - not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but ominous words indeed.
“I think the damage was done in the pre-season,” he said.
“When I speak to people in and around the club I think they were severely undermanned in pre-season with some of the cultural and behavioural patterns that started to emerge under Ben’s watch that were detrimental.
“Ultimately, he recruited the players and the players ended up getting him the sack and getting Tisdale the sack and ended up taking us out of the division.
I suppose I'd have loved Sandgaard to have nicked that premier league coach whose club dearly wanted to hang onto him. That would've shown real intent. He has though returned once again to the bargain basement. I do of course wish for success, I want to be optimistic and have bought a season ticket ... it's just that ... oh I dunno

With only perhaps three or four players of sufficient quality for a promotion team i wish whoever it is the best of luck!3

Swindon fans on Garner.

Like the sound of this one:
While I can understand people being critical about the home form and the tippy tappy football (to quote an old manager), I think some are forgetting the backroom staff. We managed to get more games out of Baudry, Conroy and Iandolo than anyone else has. We even got a bit out of Lyden. Then there is the way that Williams and Egbo's fitnesses were managed.
To me, the biggest loss would be the infrastructure and training regime put in place by Garner. That appears (from the outside) to be a big part of what the management team offered.
Frustrating to be rebuilding again, but, every problem provides an opportunity.

Now that's why we kept Davison.0

TS “I bloody love football me, yeah even own a club, Charlton Athletic, not sure if you’ve, you’ve heard of them?”
TS ”Anyway, out tonight? Celebrate the new job?”
BG “Yeah, going down the Royal Oak, do you know it?”
TS “Do I, yup, I know it, I take my guitar down there sometimes, last time was after we beat Fleetwood at home 2-0 in February. No come down, drinks will be on me, in me. Me, Lager, Martin, Lager, Gilbey, Lager sometimes apple juice”8 -

Maybe they went into it with a complete open mind and wanted to hear from as many managers as possible which is why the process is taking as long as it is.
Secondly, and this is complete ignorance on my part due to my lack of knowledge, but what do you know about the Swindon team and it’s players to say they had one of the best squads in the league? From what I read they had 7 players at the beginning of the season, and had been in somewhat of a downward spiral.
If you believe that then IMHO you are deluded. TS much like RD has a very small pool of managers who will work under his 'set up', especially in League one, which he is now finding. Garner wasn't first choice or even 5th, but he may well be one of the few prepared to work under the set up provided by TS and MS.

We keep on appointing managers with either no experience or with no previous successes on their CV. Jimmy Seed, Theo Foley, Lennie Lawrence, Steve Gritt, Alan Curbishley, Chris Powell. When will we learn and listen to the experts on Charlton Life.13

would definitely feel a bit underwhelmed with this appointment, but then again we've gone down the 'name' route (Adkins) and I was very optimistic when he was appointed and look how that turned out
personally I'd have kept JJ, but if it's Garner then I'll back him but he's certainly gonna need to hit the ground running and have us in the top 6 by November or the knives will be out for him I suspect.
He needs to be backed recruitment wise6 -
I'd be willing to give him a chance but if he brings Williams back then I'm 100% done.

I know we’re a pissy club in the world of football and our neighbours ridicule us , horrendous times to be supporting us and I fully understand why fans are pissed off with it all .
I’ve got no view on Garner , I’ll judge on what he does for us, let’s hope he gets a better run at it than Jacko was given4
