My childhood hero - along wih Johhny H. I even got a number 6 put on my adidas replica shirt - only for us to sign Paul Miller who always insisted on having the number 6 shirt and so Shirty moved to 5. I wasn't happy about it, I can tell you. I still cringe when I recall someone calling me "Miller" when I was playing football in the park one day.0

No one here will forget his 2 goals in the last 7 minutes of extra time in the PlayOff staying up reply against Leeds.
We truly did snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, stayed in the top flight - so thank you, Shirty!0 -

When I got home from St Andrews after seeing us beat Leeds in the First Division play-off, I must have watched Shirtliff's interview with Yorkshire TV twenty times in a row. It was a classic. The biased Yorkie commentator was obviously gutted and pig-sick at seeing mighty Leeds overcome in extra time by the Addicks. "Tell us Peter, what does it feel like, you a Yorkshire lad, to deny Leeds promotion." Shirtliff's reply "listen, Charlton pay my wages and that's all I care about." Classic I tell thee.0

And damned Leeds with faint praise, "I like John Pearson!" although Leeds were dirty as hell throughout that final, Shirtliff was no angel, kneeing a Leeds player in the head in our area, got a booking today he'd get a red card and extended ban - it was so blatant.
First saw Shirtliff at Forest when we lost 4-0, early after we were promoted, despite the score he stood out as class, the next weekend he was celebrating our victory at Old trafford.0 -
Shirtlifter - absolute, utter legend. Him, Thommo and (to a lesser extent and only in a few matches) Paul Miller were my favourite players growing up. After Leroy of course...0

You could say he saved the existence of the club. Back in 1987 we needed the revenues from crowds that First Division football would bring and relegation would almost have certainly brought extinction having spent just one season in the top flight. His goals were priceless in keeping the club afloat financially. A Charlton legend. He'll get a clap and cheer from me.0

Feck that the best bit of the match was "doing" Iain Baird with his knee. Baird thought he was an hard man but Shirty scared the daylights out of him and he didn't want to know for the rest of the match.

Shirtliff was immense but what a great match, the first time I cried with emotion following Charlton. I was at home with the old man and we were going nuts at the radio, what is it with Play-offs and Charlton. All of the 11 played their part (including Miller, to a point), Mark Stuart came on to be effective also. Look at the team (below), some greats in there. Just another unbelievable night in our colourful history, but that’s why we love the club/team so much. It’s never dull!

I was lucky enough to interview him once for an article I wrote when he was on the coaching staff at Barnsley. I have just dug it out and here are a couple of the questions I asked him:
Q: "1-0 down, 2-1 up, Shirtliff scored and we stayed up" is one of my favourite all time Charlton ditty's. You must tell me how you felt after the final whistle of the Play Off Final against Leeds at St Andrews."
A: Relieved to have succeeded in securing 1st Div status. Then very proud to have played such a major part in the final game."
Q: "You played in defence with a number of good centre backs at the time - Pates, Pender, Caton, Miller, Thompson - who was the best?"
A: Pates - good left foot and a good lad and player. Miller - strong character, good lad and team player. Both good players."
Q: The next season (1987/88) we stayed up by sending Chelsea into the Play-Offs instead of ourselves. Stamford Bridge was like a cauldron that day and not for the faint hearted. What do you remember of the game?"
A: Chelsea tried to intimidate us physically. We stood our ground and got a deserved draw which was required. There were certainly a few challenges flying about!!"
Q: "Don't you wish you had played for us at The Valley?"
A: I would very much have liked to play at The Valley (as it is now) for Charlton. I may return in another capacity one day."
This was around 1996. There was a load of questions but he finished off by saying: "I still look for Charlton's result on Saturdays. I hold the club in great esteem. People at Charlton appreciated my efforts, which is not always the case."

Definitely Martin Allen in the League Cup at QPR. Paul Williams nipped in on a Maddix back pass to go round the keeper 1-0. Allen was late on Shirtliff and he retaliated so was sent off. Trevor Francis equalised and then got the winner with an overhead kick. He also got John Humphrey booked with a bit of slyness which thereafter made him a wrong 'un in my book. Was very down about that defeat for quite a while.0 -
