I'm biased and age may be lending me Oggy's rose tinted spectacles but for me Len Glover is right up there.

I don't remember too many defenders catching him once he'd got past them.

    Rommedahl

Just a shame he never had the ball with him.

Benty was electric though - especially against Birmingham at home when he made up about 30m on Melchiot - that was hilarious.

For all his faults, I doubt we've ever had anyone faster than Rommedahl. Rufus was lightning as well.

Outside of the club Rommedahl is considered one of the fastest players around, so probably him. Rarely used his full pace though.

We've had plenty of quick players, but not many 'lightning quick' ones.

For the old gits who remember the late 60's ...... manager Eddie Firmani signed a right winger from Manchester City,
    called Paul Hince.

He was lightening quick, but quite often he'd over run the ball.

Made a cracking start scoring 3 or 4 goals in his first half a dozen matches and then just lost any impact - seeming to fade away. Then went to Bury.

After his playing career was over, he became a reporter in Manchester and wrote a book:
    "Memories : . . . of a Failed Footballer & a Crap Journalist"

    Linky - Paul Hince memoirs

Apparently it's a good read on the inside of football, written in a poignant and humourous way.
    Charlton behind the scenes content.

Paul Williams in his first spell with us in the Shithurst Park days.

    Willo could really shift.

Apparently he used to get his remarkable energy from eating vast amounts of sweets just before kick off - he swore the sugar rush and E numbers gave him an edge.

I seem to remember Mike Kenning being very quick, he also had a hell of a shot on him

    Good shout.

Mike Kenning could outstrip any defender.
  • Rommerdahl. He didn't do much for us but will always remeber the Chelsea game and the Valley.

Seeing him "skin" Ashley Cole time and again really was a joy to watch!

The young Micky Bennett on the right wing in Lennie's top flight team could shift.

But when he came back to Charlton a few years later, he would have made Grant Basey look pacy.

No one yet mentioned Shaun Newton?

Newts was all power and pace, even if lacking a little bit of nous.

In terms of pure pace Shaun Newton must be up there.

Shame he was a bit of a Dracula

There was a spell in the 1988-9 season when we had John Humphrey, Micky Bennet and Paul Williams together, all three were really quick. With Morts pulling the strings, there was some real excitement there for a while.

Newton was fast, as was Rufus. Benty (D) was like lightning, I wonder if he was one of those that was "too quick for his body", given the injuries he seemed to get. Rommedahl was as quick as anyone I've seen but delivered so little.

Over the first six yards, where it really matters, I give you Sir Derek Hales.

I'm struggling to think of a better striker than Lisbie on our books at the moment, last season or the season before come to that!

Cant disagree there Len in this league or the championship, but we had him for all our premiership life when he was just not good enough or fit enough!!

Some sense of humour you've got there, Valley Mac, lol

    Arsenal/ Newcastle had Super Mac.
Our Hughie was known amongst my crowd as ...... Plastic Mac.

Redeeming feature: He worked his socks off most of the time, despite being not unduly blessed with talent.

And he scored the 1st goal against the Spuds in the 2nd minute, when we thumped them 4-1 and Flash grabbed his hat-trick.

Rommers for me every time. I'm in a minority but I thought he was the right player at the wrong time for us. Mike Kenning is a good shout too. But a very good player has speed with balance and touch too and that has to be Claus Jensen.
