Intersting moral one to ponder this.

We're not linked in any way (Notts County have made him an offer), but just wondering what the feeling would be if we were interested ?

Someone who has paid his dues, and despite being 33, would bring goals to a team that appears to be lacking a goal scorer ?

Or

No way, morally i'd be disgusted ?

What would you be thinking ?

He's rightly done his time and has a lot to live with on his conscience.
I don't see why he shouldn't be able to return to his 'trade', as he has done, so I wouldn't have an issue wiht us signing him other than whether is good enough.

He has paid his dues. Whether those dues were sufficient is another issue but that is the fault of the parole system not Lee Hughes and not unique to him either.

My concerns are purely footballing. A 33 year old striker would be a high earner in a potless club and may not be the most highly motivated player either having played at the top level. Hardly a role model for the youngsters we need to build around either.

    A "NO" from me.

Will this be the first thread ever started by one of the site's "top boys" to be sunk?!

    Difficult one indeed.

I'd find myself hard warming to him whether he scored goals or not but if he was going to get us 20 goals next year i'd definately take him. Should he be totally and utterley condemned for what he did? Yes. Did he get punished for what he did? Yes. Did he serve his time? Yes Should he be able to ply his trade again? Yes.

Whether I agree with his punishment, the time he did etc the answer to those questions is still 'yes'.

I'm a yes, begrudingly if he is going to score us goals.

As a footballer he's over the hill, I don't think he would contribute enough to make it a worthwhile risk.

Morally/ethically, he's done his time, has demonstrated contrition and appears genuine in his remorse, so if he were younger I'd say yes. I do wonder though, how many of those who don't want him here have totally unblemished criminal records...

In my view, he commited a terrible, terrible crime but has been punished to the full effect of the law. He should therefore be allowed to take part in society, not least by being allowed to work.

Having said that, I would find it very difficut to cheer him on in a Charlton shirt.

Exactly. If he's paid his dues and a lesson learned, there has to be a point where you wipe the slate clean.
That doesn't mean I don't feel for the family of his victim, who will always bear the scars of Lee Hughes actions.

But professionally, he should be judged now on his merits as footballer.

I also agree with what salad said.

Though it would be fair to question whether he has learnt his lesson and whether his personality and future behaviour is going to be right for the club, in the same way curbs signed 'charlton-types'. But then we should be asking the same questions of every signing. As BFR said, his remorse seems genuine to me.

NO, NO, NO. A MURDERING SCUMBAG. IF WE SIGNED HIM I REALLY WOULD SEND BACK MY SEASON TICKET AND REFUSE TO WATCH WHILST HE WAS AT THE CLUB.

I often approach these dilemmas with a "what if" attitude. For example "What if my dad had done the same" or "What if my best mate done the same".

Yes - it doesnt make what they did any different but it does alter your perspective slightly.

Is Lee Hughes married with kids? Surely he deserves a second chance based on providing for his family?

well apparently he deserves a second thread.... (ducks)
  • sign him up i would say

i understand all the negatives but t wouldnt come into my mind at all. In life i have made some ill fated decisions to do similar to what Lee has done i got away with it they were reckless decisions that put others and myself at risk i was young and niave and didnt think of the consequences i rolled the dice and i got away with it fortunatly for myself and others no one got hurt or died as a result.

there for the grace of god go i

yeah but once causing an accident you didn't desert the scene of the crime, leaving people dying and fighting for their lives, and go into hiding for three days. Total utter scumbag who is beyond contempt. If we are are family club we'd never go within a country mile of scumbags like him. Next you'd be advocating signing Rob Knox's killer.

Who knows how you'd react to doing something like that unless you were actually in the situation?

And i'm not trying to defend Hughes here, I abhor what he did (especially the leaving the scene of the crime) but you need to sometimes look from perspectives other than your own.

what wss said i am not defending lee hughes he made a mistake he has paid his dues (if it was long enough imo it was not) he deserves a second chance
