It tried to earlier down here in Sittingbourne but the sun came out and it stopped. Very cold though.

No. It's all about the moisture.
A long period of high pressure in winter can make it very cold whilst also reducing moisture content in the air.1 -

We went out for pre-Christmas family meal today and in-laws, driving back to Lewes, have had to abandon their car in Maresfield and are staying in a hotel.

Been snowing here in Swanley since around 5pm. Not much at first but now getting heavier.
