The starting line which was wrong was down to Appleton
The squad has lacked a central striker to hold the balm up - the Squad has lacked experience
But then I look at Stevenage - pumping above their weight with a third of our budget ???0 -
Bit of both but Appleton is concerning me.
Saying that though we cannot keep sufficient numbers fit.I'm hoping the key to all of this could be the fitness guru from Brighton.

i'm hoping flemming talks some sense into the cretinous appleton and gradually takes over - maybe thats the plan - replace appleton and save face with the owners by not actually sacking him but effectively replacing him3

As said on the Appleton thread, he's not solely to blame as there's some poor players (before the newbies) BUT a better manager finds a solution.

The second half line up was also "down to Appleton", a half that we were better overall, and but for a fluky deflection would have got the draw we deserved...🙄1 -

The manager.Whatever kind of squad you have, a manager adapts the tactics to suit the opposition.Ours doesn’t.He goes with a similar tactic every - you know the one…. Keep passing it around the back and hope we score, if we concede, don’t change, if we lead, don’t change. Then when we are losing with a couple of minutes to go, throw everything at them and plead hard luck when it produces nothing.You can see it physically too - he never makes any gestures / in game changes from the coaching area.Derby twice, Pompey, and Bolton, all coming up.Appleton will be gone at the end of Feb, leaving us in a relegation scrap, with Curtis Fleming taking over.2

Definitly the the squad. Appleton has resigned many players who played under him at various clubs. Do you think they would have signed up if they thought he was a poor coach!! We have heard from several signings that they worked under Appleton's coaching team and seem to respect him, saying that apart from Charlton being a big club, they know what the manager expects and have enjoyed working with him in the past.0

It’s not about getting the best out of CBT, it’s about getting the best out of the team. We saw from the second half yesterday that it is possible to put a decent team out with these players, in the 3-5-2 that loads of us have been calling for for months. Appletons stubbornness has cost us any chance of doing something this seasonScoham said:

Appleton is at fault, however he’s the head coach, rather than manager. So giving him time, so it gets his squad together doesn’t ring true. As a coach don’t you usually deal with the players you are given, rather than pick and choose the players you want.
He’s incapable of motivating and sorting out tactics to overcome the opposition.4 -

The two problems are of equal gravity
The squad is deeply inadequate - the recent signings all look like improvements - we remain desperately short up front and at the back, the financial strictures under which the team has to work must make it essential that lots of deadwood needs binning before any more tangible improvements can be acquired or rented, we are clogged up with crocks and inadequate midfielders
Based on what we had seen up to 4pm on Saturday Apples hadn't a clue how to get anything like the best out of the resources available to him - the first half lineup was the nadir. The second half was drastically better but that bar was ground level at best.
I have no confidence whatever that Apples will have any more clue when/if he has better to choose from. His pitchside demeanour does not speak of someone engaged in what's happening or caring about the outcome, he looks like "I've sent them out there, it's all up to them, no matter how shit, lazy or stupid they look I'm just gonna stand here until the ref calls time."0 -
Neither is the biggest problem. That is the below benchmark ability to keep the squad fit and to avoid injuries that a better regime ( such as Posh’s apparently) manages. We know it is below benchmark because Methven has said so. The Brighton guy is supposed to directly address the issue. Let’s see.

These new guys who rate Appleton as their best ever coach, would love to know who the other coaches were!

Agree but CBT has arguably been a must because we have so few goal threats, especially with Aneke and Leaburn injured.NabySarr said:

The squad isn’t fully suited to any single formation, which is why we’ve made four signings already with at least 2/3 more expected. I could see more than that as I expect CBT will be sold and other loanees potentially return to their clubs.0 -
That is true but if it’s a choice between getting the best out of May and getting the best out of CBT, I would choose May as he’s actually going to be here next season.Scoham said:

The squad isn’t fully suited to any single formation, which is why we’ve made four signings already with at least 2/3 more expected. I could see more than that as I expect CBT will be sold and other loanees potentially return to their clubs.We need goals from midfield and the wing backs to chip in with the new system. That’s got to be a priority for recruitment in the summer as although they are both good players, I don’t think Fiorini or L.Watson have enough goals in them. Plus neither Edun or T.Watson have been that impressive1 -
