Michael Appleton - March 2025 appointed Shrewsbury manager (p124)

            Got a theory -
Appleton got sacked on Saturday night and, after an extensive, exhaustive search for a replacement on Sunday, with absolutely no luck, he was re-interviewed this morning and given the job at an "undesclosed" unveiling ceremony.13 -
Like many I found the press conference cringeworthy.
There comes a time in many workplaces, whatever the rights or wrongs or moral justifications or otherwise, where it's obvious that personnel has to change. It always 'feels' ugly and very much like the end.
It is clear that Appleton has reached that stage. He won't walk so the SMT's only option is to put an end to his tenure quickly. We've all seen enough of these type of situations to know that things will just get worse - the SMT are kidding themselves if they think otherwise.11 -

He's getting dogs abuse online and saying 'they wouldn't say it to my face' is both fair enough and true!
I'm going to wait for him before the game tomorrow and have a chat.3 -
Someone posted earlier that they reckon the money men said no as they don't want to pay the wages of three managers at one time. I reckon this could have substance.
relationships must be at an all time low of we've sacked him and then reinstated him at the request/directions of the money men!
I don't know what's worse, sacking him and then telling him it's a misunderstanding or being sacked and going back to work the next day!!!
another day, another Charlton soap opera6 -

He did ask where I got my coat from as he liked it.

Don't know what world you live in. He's had loads of time. He is useless. One win tomorrow won't change anything. That's if we actually win, which I doubt. The longer this clown is in charge the more likely we are to get relegatedlancashire lad said:Since today's press conference I find those of you with continued derogatory remarks to be rather distasteful, Ok the Appleton is not doing well but he is our head coach and has a job to do tomorrow night in putting out a team and tactics to win the match and as Charlton supporters we should support him in his endeavour not continue to vilify him.15 -

Perhaps those that saw him not being there had a poor vantage point from a grassy knoll.JamesSeed said:
In this modern age a conspiracy theory will develop around this. There will those who will ALWAYS believe that he didn’t take training today, and they will say the footage put out on the OS was faked, and that he is indeed a lizard.L0rd_M0ntagu3 said:
Seen it both on Twitter and other places that “he definitely didn’t he take training”Bailey said:
What were the comments L0rd ? People on here said he didn't take training, he said he did, I can't comment, I wasn't there. What else have I missed something ?L0rd_M0ntagu3 said:So Appleton is saying he definitely took training this morning, others are suggesting (still) that he definitely didn’t.I think the club is in a tricky spot with some of his comments, he’s really not helped himself, and now the fans have turned I don’t see what benefit there is in giving him one more game.
Just seems odd, that so many were convinced that he didn’t. Not digging anyone out btw, sources are wrong sometimes. 🤷🏼♂️
But, how a club director can read Appleton’s comments and think “everything is okay” seems very odd. Tomorrow night will be even more toxic now because of some of his comments.

I’ll hold your coat mate but mouth to mouth resuscitation is completely out of the question 😉.ElfsborgAddick said:cafcsinger said:Not an Appleton fan at all, but don't really see much wrong in the 'calling out fans for a fight' quote.

Was a strange appointment & it's even more strange to be dragging this out & prolonging the inevitable
What evidence is there that he has lost the dressing room? I hate these throwaway comments, the sort of comments that lead to ' no smoke without fire' scenario. Why would so many players who have played with Appleton have joined us. Do I think he will go-yes, do I want him to be our long term manager-no, but making stuff up is unacceptable.1 -
Never has it been more certain that Charlton are going to win tomorrow.13

I suggest Apples scrapping with the fans will be infinately more entertaining than the actual match. Will CL start a "FIGHT FIGHT" thread?1

I just can’t see how they wouldn’t have have got sign off from US based members of the consortium first before sacking him.Todds_right_hook said:Someone posted earlier that they reckon the money men said no as they don't want to pay the wages of three managers at one time. Americans generally tend to give their head coaches time. That’s easier to do with no relegations, steady TV income and a salary cap. Not so easy in ‘soccer’.Todds_right_hook said:Someone posted earlier that they reckon the money men said no as they don't want to pay the wages of three managers at one time. Maybe they should stop letting Scott and Methven appoint their mates.1 -

Alfie May's reaction after the final whistle on Saturday - maybe a little circumstantial and not evidence of the entire dressing room, but having your top scorer and talisman react that way I feel is an indicator that all isn't well.altrinchamaddick said:Gravesend_Addick said:What a strange day. An easy win or a bad defeat, something strange is bound to happen.

I suppose it’s plausible he is effectively sacked but Scott hasn’t told him - yet.By that I mean the decision is made but due to Scott’s inability to plan ahead we don’t have anyone lined up and they think leave him there for now rather than disrupt any preparation for Tuesday.I live in hope.Winning Tuesday doesn’t mean he should stay. He’s had long enough.0

I haven't "made anything up". All I've done is given my opinion on a football forum of how it looks to me. I thought that was the purpose of sites like this. That's not the first time Alfie's done that on the pitch towards the bench (Appleton).Manic_mania said:

Side issue, but to me THAT shows leadership and passion, both what we need in a captain. Not saying Dobbo isn't a good man, but he's not in the same mould. If Dobbo goes we need an Alfie on the pitch to gee up the others. Let's face it he's pretty much the only player undroppable.1 -

I'd be happy if we win every game to the end of the season, make the playoffs and gain promotion. I would even go as far as to eat humble pie and cheer Appleton. Football fans are fickle as f, and I'm a football fan.ShootersHillGuru said:Never has it been more certain that Charlton are going to win tomorrow.7 -
Catching up on a tonne of posts and can’t understand what’s happened with this sacking. Can anyone sum up?1

Wouldn't you have taken one look at Appleton's managerial career to know that he'd never walk away from a pay-off?
He's a professional at it.4 -

It was untrue - Appleton’s done the press conference and he’ll be in the dugout tomorrow night.Valley11 said:Catching up on a tonne of posts and can’t understand what’s happened with this sacking. Can anyone sum up?1 -

yeah don't disagree with you at all, I was responding to the point that there is no evidence of losing the dressing room - from my view it is. (edited getting mixed up with the quoting so removed this bit apologies)The Prince-e-Paul said:

I guess we will see tomorrow night what the response from the players is to all of this.0 -

Chris, how do you know that Appleton is lying and yet you state the contact has no reason to lie.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
Was wondering the same thing. Can't remember who the poster was without trawling back through 30 pages but they said they had a very reliable training ground contact who confirmed Fleming took training and Appleton definitely didn't.L0rd_M0ntagu3 said:So Appleton is saying he definitely took training this morning, others are suggesting (still) that he definitely didn’t.I think the club is in a tricky spot with some of his comments, he’s really not helped himself, and now the fans have turned I don’t see what benefit there is in giving him one more game.
I think it's fair to assume that the contact has no reason to lie and would've just said 'yes' if Appleton was there, so why has Appleton now been put in the position where he has to lie to the press?
All become a bit of a mess really.4 -

Don’t like this implication that he’s only in it for a payoff and he doesn’t actually care about wins and losses. It’s very unfair.SELR_addicks said:Wouldn't you have taken one look at Appleton's managerial career to know that he'd never walk away from a pay-off?
He's a professional at it.
I doubt you’ve ever had a bad performance review at work and decided later that day that actually the company is better off without you and you’re going to resign.5 -

Very Clough-esque.
This will be the watershed moment and in ten years time the day after he's led us to our 3rd premier league treble and champions league trophy they'll be a mad revision of forum postings lying that we were in the minority of championing his stay as we could see he was our Sir Alex whilst everyone lost their heads calling for his exit.2
