Good luck but good riddance. Cant believe he was haggling after money from Charlton after all they have done for him.

We still bang on about a natural goalscorer, but we need a target man now. God forbid Burton getting injured *touch wood*

So the thing I want to know is what about the transfer hold due to the takeover?
    Is it on or off?

Gray was never really a target man anyway. Iwelumo far better in the air and stronger, even though he gave away a lot more fouls.
  • 9 goals in 47 games says it all. One paced, cr@p first touch, very little 'fight' in him and a poor goal scoring record through most of his career. Why we ever paid £1.5M for this bloke I will never understand. Any money coming into the club for him is a bonus IMO. I don't rate Kandol that highly but at least he has determination and a threat at goal so if it is a straight swap then we are better off for that.

Valleyman asked: ''Why we ever paid £1.5M for this bloke I will never understand.''

Well if you read the OS report carefully it says : ''Gray was signed from Burnley for AN INITIAL £1.5m in January 2008''

Does that mean that if he'd been any use (i.e. had played more games and/or scored more goals) we might have ended up paying MORE?

    Ye gods...

By simply going off what we know, i'd wish Gray well at Barnsley. It seems this deal is best for everyone. He's not had the best of times on and off the field and wanted a move and we're now rid of his wages and can move towards signing a striker who wants to be here. Let's hope Parky can continue his run of signing players who will fit into the team and more importantly, improve it.

    No big loss.

Wish him all the best and his family though.

Bit harsh that, there is no real proof that this was the reason for the delay.

Parkys comments on this deal a few weeks back was that Barnsley needed to up their offer, given their lack of goals this season, perhaps they have done.

Poor signing by Pardew imo, yet another example of a decent player being signed and then the team not being set up correctly to play to their strengths. I hope he does well and helps keep Barnsley up.

nope any way about it I wish him the best.
Football is full of greedy bastards and Gray has had to put up with some shit the last couple of years. If he has demanded the same wage as he had with us, so what? he's a footballer they all demand ridiculous amounts of money!

The memory that stays with me is of Andy rushing back from the hospital after visiting his wife post-op. and being in the team less than one hour later. I prefer to think that was pretty noble, (stupid of Pardew though). Doesn't fit with what folks are saying now, but I don't have the inside info.

As ken said above, if the club were somehow in the wrong according to some for digging their heels in - apparently - then I'm guessing that those same people will all be on here now congratulating them on "doing the right thing" as was asked.

    Yes?

As with the takeover it's a case of which rumour and which spin you choose to believe. Gray is possibly signing his last decent pro contract, has had injury problems and a sick wife and is expected to accept an offer that doesn't meet with his demands and needs, in some eyes that makes him greedy, in others sensible. Perhaps Barnsley offered too little to both Charlton and Gray, perhaps expecting him to sign to move back near to home and therefore that they could get a decentish player cheaply and in the process take advantage of the situation, maybe a case can be made for greed on their behalf?

Whatever the facts are Gray is gone, another high wage off the bill, hopefully freeing up some money on a striker coming this way (Kandol?) and I wish Gray well. From a footballing perspective the whole move to Charlton didn't work out so I don't think we'll be missing anything.

I read on the OS today that Gray signed for Charlton for an initial £1.5million ..... they should check their facts: it was for a fee rising to £1.5million - that's not quite the same thing.

And I'd always been told, can't remember by who, that it's only true if it's on the OS. *shakes head*
