5 games to re-live all over again

Having posted the palace v Charlton cup game programme on another thread I started thinking about games I’d pick if I could re-live them all over again.

The two play off finals against Sunderland are a given. The Doncaster home leg of the play offs was an exceptional night. That Pompey away game was an exceptional performance by the Charlton fans and the 68/69 palace replay was just an amazing night from
just trying to get ti the ground and then all through the game.

I then realised that I hadn’t picked one single PL or old first division game, or even the back to the valley match, not that there wasn’t any good or great matches then or since but that the five I’ve mentioned were all on another level above the rest.

just looking at this team and remembering that night, a stand out fantastic memory in a season of them.

The 1-0 over Ipswich in the Playoffs - the away leg was quite tasty as well 😂

The atmosphere at this game hasn’t been passed since

Now that was a good Charlton team - Wright, one of the best keepers we've ever had; Curtis, King of the Pens; that CB partnership of Went and Reeves: the barrel chested Moore and gifted runner, Campbell in CM; Pea Wee on the wing; Tees, the best header of a ball we've seen and Treacy the cool, calm and collected finisher.

Battle of the Bridge from 1988
The 2-2 draw at Highbury in 1989, signing "we're going back to The Valley" all game
A personal one, Charlton 3 Barnet 1 from 1992 at Upton Park, as that was the start of me becoming a regular.
The promotion celebrating game in 11/12 with the skydiver landing on the pitch.

I just prefer the two 4-2 games against West Ham
  • 1) Vs Sunderland, playoff final 1
    2) Vs Sunderland, playoff final 2
    3) Away win at Millwall 95/96
    4) Relegating Palace
    5) 4-4 with Ipswich - no not that one. The other one, away in 1990. One of the first games I went to and was hooked since. Similarly we were 2-0 down, got it back to 2-2, went 4-2 down and then came back to 4-4

Didnt we also go top when we beat Southampton 5-0 in 1998?

Try to pick some different ones.

Southampton 6-2 Beating the FA Cup holders
    Spurs 4-1
    Chelsea 5-2 Simonsen.
    Man United away 1-0
Carlisle away X 3. There are three to choose from

Aston Villa 3 - Charlton 4. Down to 10 men, Stevie Brown in goal, hanging onto our survival hopes for another week with a late winner via about 6 deflections, only to have them sadly dashed a week later.

For those of a certain age that team is just engrained on the memory  :) Maybe my memory is playing tricks but I don't remember too many "bit part" players coming in so must have been lucky with injuries.
Keirs of course, Dennis Booth, Ray Crawford, Luciano Masiello (though I think he only played once in 68/69 ?) can't think of any others but maybe ?

I remember that Palace game really well. Turning them over 2-0 after drawing at the Valley the previous Saturday. I also remember being on the train back up to London. The carriage I was in was destroyed. It really was carnage back then.

    Southampton 6-2
    Cardiff at home 76/77
West Ham at home league cup circa 76

    Man U away 86
    Man U home 3-3
Last game in the Prem against the Spuds

Can I say both play-off finals? ‘98 I was there but too young to remember any of it, would love to experience it all now. ‘19 I wasn’t in the country but would love the opportunity to relive that day in person if it was possible.

Others would have to be Liverpool 2003, Chelsea 2004, Palace 2005.

Shouts for Wycombe & Hartlepool at home after promotion was wrapped up in 2012 too.
