RIP. Loved him in Boys from the black stuff

Yosser Hughes: "I'm desperate, Father."
Priest: "Call me Dan."
Yosser: "I'm desperate, Dan." (The glorious gag from 'Blackstuff'.)

Always remember watching Boys from the Blackstuff in English lessons during secondary school and has always stayed with me. Was also brilliant in LOTR.

He was being featured on Breakfast TV this morning as he’s got a starring role in the BBC drama the Responder. His accent is so good I always thought he was from Liverpool but in fact he’s from Manchester. Terrific talent. Sad news RIP

Never watched Boys from the Blackstuff but saw him recently in a repeat of Unforgotten where he played a dodgy priest.

    RIP.
  • RIP Yosser Hughes (Bernard Hill).

Bernard has left an amazing CV, but BFTBS was a shocklingly accurate and distressing tale of life under Thatcher in the early '80s.   And Yosser exemplified that like no one else.

Thank god we've moved on so much.

Sat a couple of tables away from him in a bar at LAX once. Wanted to go and shake his hand, but he seemed quite content on his own, so it felt unfair to disturb him. RIP Bernard.

My dad and I watched the play The Black Stuff and then the series. I loved watching it with him. We laughed and cried together many times. A fantastic piece of work really getting to the heart of what that Tory bitch did to real people but told with a lot of humour and respect. And Yosser and Bernard’s portrayal were at the heart of it.

    RIP sir.

Just wanted to add he starred in an off beat arty flick by Peter Greenaway called Drowning by Numbers, which is one of my all time favourites. Needless to say he was great as the local coroner, M
