BT wifi and Sky Q incompatability

A week ago I changed my phone and broadband supplier from Sky to BT but kept my Sky Q and mini box contract.
While there have been some teething difficulties with the house wifi it now seems OK. However when I try to connect the BT router to the Sky Q the password is accepted, the connection made and within 20secs it disconnects. The BT (not Openreach) engineer advised that Sky have a blocker in their system that stops the router connection which Ofcom have told them to stop, he advised me to contact Sky who could remotely remove the block. Sky said that there is no block and after some insistence agreed to send a Sky engineer next week
I have tried changing the 5mzs channel but BT engineer changed it back as better that way.
While our Sky Q box operates OK it will not transit to the mini boxes as there is no wifi

If you read this lot then thanks and any advice would be appreciated

If the router is near the Sky Q box, just connect them via ethernet

As I understand it the mini boxes form a mesh network with the Q box. So I suspect it is only that the Q box is not connecting to the router properly.  I read somewhere that the Sky Q mesh runs on channel 36. If so, it may be that your router is also using this channel for the 5 ghz network.  If so, try switching your router 5 ghz channel to 44 or 48.

(May not be relevant but my Samsung TV had a lot of problems connecting to the router.  It seems this is because it hunts for the best signal and kept repeatedly switching between 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz and then gave up. I fixed this by setting up my 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz networks on the router with separate SSIDs and connected the TV to just the 5 ghz signal.)

I have BT Full Fibre and Sky Q and have never had any compatibility issues. Connects fine. Both mini boxes work fine. When Sky Q was first released the only caveat it came with was that you cannot use the Mini Boxes as WiFi Hotspots if you don't have Sky Broadband. Not sure if that is still the case?

Sounds more like a network meshing issue to me and Sky should be sorting that out for you. Could be that the WiFi signal in the rooms the main boxes are in is not strong enough to sustain the connection.

Have you reset the Sky Q mini boxes? Also check WiFi is enabled on the main box, it may be the minis were connecting via the router to the main box. Usually resetting the mini boxes network will get it up and running.

Best course of action is a wired network and disable the Sky Q Box and Sky Mini’s WIFI from the engineers menu. A reset of the network from the engineers menu and reactivating the Sky Minis may work though.

Have you got any WIFI network boosters in the house? Some of them have a wired network out that you can plug into the Sky Minis. The mini thinks it’s on the wired network but is connected via a booster and you can then turn off the WIFI on the Sky devices. I use Linksys Velops to do this but there are loads of options.

The Sky engineer will be able to advise though so I’d wait for them.
  • Also have BT WiFi and Sky Q with 3 mini-boxes but no issues. Hope you get it sorted. Sometimes technology is a real pain.
  • May I be the first to say that I have little or no idea what on earth people are going on about here .Mini boxes forming a mesh network? Help!

Try resetting the mini network connection. If that doesn't work, wait for the engineer, they'll likely give you a booster for their mesh system.

Just recently got full fibre broadband available to me at my home. (Virgin) At present with Sky with an average download speed of 25mb/s. I have four tvs connected to Sky Q and a whole load of WiFi connected devices like Hive and Ring plus four Amazon Echos plus the other stuff that uses WiFi these days, phones, tablets, etc. What sort of download speeds do I need to get all these devices to work seamlessly. I don’t want to pay for speeds that are not required. TIA.

LL - please keep us updated on what the Sky engineer says and if he gets it to work. We have BT broadband, currently with sky +, but thinking of upgrading to Sky Q shortly.
  • Aren't Sky phasing Sky Q out ? May as well make the jump to Sky Stream

Mostly. You can't become a new customer with it anymore unless you take their broadband as well.

Thanks for all the advise, I shall await the Sky engineer on Monday afternoon and I'll let you all know what transpires

It should be an easy fix. No reason for it not to work.

I had precisely this problem as mentioned on the thread you started called Sky Q.  This is what I posted then.

I had a problem connecting the BT smart hub 2 to Sky Q (by wi-fi) - as did the BT engineer who visited my house.  He tried various software patches to no avail.

In the end I went with Sky for broadband too - been very stable since.  This was a year and a half ago.

I was rather hoping that they'd have come up with a fix in the last 18 months :/ .  No one in BT would take ownership of this problem - they were happy to see the back of me in the end.

It's really quite straight forward for sky Q to work (inc mini's) with any broadband provider, with non Sky Broadband the mini's connect to the sky q main box. The only thing worth doing on your non sky router end is making sure it's not on channel 36 for the 5ghz channel. If you previously had Sky Broadband all you need to do is reset the network settings on each box. If the mini's can't connect it's due to distance to the main box generally.

Asking BT to look at why Sky Q mini's don't work is the wrong place to go.

I had this and Sky installed an extra booster box plugged by Ethernet into the BT Smart Hub. Worked okay after that.

What is Sky Stream what does it come in

I rang up Sky asking for an engineer to come round cos we want to move main Qbox (have 3 mini Q boxes as well )to another room(there’s a sky dish and thick wires coming through wall ) , internet (Gigaclear ) isn’t great Wi-Fi wise atm cos we’re a bit rural does Sky stream involve wires boxes etc

fella said 18Th July first engineer date 🙄

    he did mention Sky Stream

The channel was changed in the software patch and it did connect but only for 20 seconds or so. There were no minis involved with my set up.

Sky Stream relies heavily on decent WiFi. If your broadband speed isn’t great you’ll have no end of problems with buffering and dropping out. Do you know what your download speed currently is ? There’s a speed checker on the MySky app.

The speed is good on direct line 250-300 in to computer but wifi wise not great kids sometimes struggle with playing live on PS5 and xbox prolly 20-40, thick walls in the house

Don't get sky stream with speeds like that. Call sky and ask for Full Fibre installation. I currently have download speed of 152, and that's with the kids tablets/ phones connected. They installed with no charge and no price increase.

Sky are slowly moving to full fibre everywhere.

250 is more than enough for Sky Stream. Maybe look at getting a better router or a wifi extender.

Following the visit of a Sky engineer all is now sorted. BT would only bring the router just inside the front door as fibre does not operate well going round corners which would have taken it to the original router position where I have ethernet connections to my Sky equipment. The Sky engineer fitted an ethernet cable from the fibre junction box back to the original router position enabling the Sky equipment to be hard wired. Why the additional bit of wiring could not have been done by BT is beyond me.

Thanks to those of you with your useful solutions

When my mum moved to her bungalow a few years back, she had sky Q installed. Because she didn't want unsightly wires where the TV was, we decided to get a mini box for use in the living room. The engineer was unsure whether it would work due to the distance between the boxes but thankfully it did. The point is, the distance wasn't that great so I suppose that can be an issue with the mini boxes.
