Remember seeing his debut at home to Boro , he was so far ahead and at a different level than anyone else on the pitch it was Ridiculous.
That was his league debut for us.

His first game for us was coming on as sub against Swansea at The Valley in a res game

Crowd was 2500 for that match which Charlton won 4-0.  Simonsen laid on goal for Walker if I remember.

His name was listed as playing in the Chelsea away match afew weeks early, that was the game Geoff Scott was injured in.
    The Swansea game finished 1-1
Pretty sure it was 4 1 mate

The only player I have ever seen for us who was so clearly above and beyond all his teammates.

By that not just the best player on the pitch but someone who is playing to a different standard again.

Paulo Di Canio will match that.

Great though Di Canio was, Simmo was just so far ahead of his teammates it was unreal. The team Di Canio played in at least had a lot of quality about it and was playing at a higher level.

    The 5-2 game v Chelsea 😍😍😍😍😍
What a game:  I was in the middle of the old shed in full voice, with    Chelsea belting out “One man went to mow” in the Jimmy Seed.   Great atmosphere.

And then then he tore them apart.   In my head, he scored two very similar goals?

My memory may have embellished it, but it felt like every time they got to 10 men went to mow, they all stood up and sang louder…til Simmo ran through their team and scored. They went quiet!  When they found their voices and tried it again, the same thing happened 😂😂

These next few brief facts may help some to remember, and others to appreciate, just what a great of the game he was.

    ---------------------------------

He was Balloon d'Dor winner in 1977.   For context, the year before it was Franz Beckenbauer, 2 years before that, Johan Cruyff.

He scored the winning goal in the European Cup Winners Cup final in 1982, just months before joining The Addicks.

When Diego Maradona joined Barca at the start of the 82/83 season, due to only 2 foreign players allowed to play in any game at that time, he would have been on the bench or trying to oust Maradona from the squad, so requested a transfer.  He turned down offers to join Real Madrid & Tottenham to sign for The Addicks for £300k as he wanted a club with less stress and attention.

He left on a free at the beginning of 1983 due to unpaid wages, joining his boyhood Danish club, Vejle BK.   Despite these moves, at the end of that year, he still came 3rd in the Ballon d'Or, behind Michel Platini & Kenny Dalgleish.

    ---------------------------------

How privileged we were to see him turn out in red, even if it was for just 16 games.

Strange that I have no recollection of all that happening and I was a paper boy at the time & would always read the back pages when walking up the paths to the front doors.
