Yep - went there (Vilnius) a few years back for a new year's eve trip.

My advice - don't trust the cabbies, the strip joints are brothels (you might think that a good or bad thing, i decline to comment), the Hotel Novotel was nice, the food is utterly, utterly atrocious (even with pictures on the menu you're hard-pressed to identify what it is) and the best bar we found was called Fashion.TV I think (they had little TV stes in every conceivable place, including the toilet mirrors).

There's an oxford Street-style high street, which has some good bars and clubs in it. You can alo find a McD's there, among other international eateries. Some of it looks beautiful, especially in the snow, but you can't escape the fact that all the men look very angry, probably because the birds are beautiful but the men all look the same.

    Nutshell closed.

March Jnr. went to Vilnius on a lad's weekend and as far as I can make out didn't see anything of the city but spent his time drinking expensive beer in a casino. Sorry, that's not much help is it? Oh, he did say they were a moody lot..I'll ask the car washers at work tomorrow, trouble is their English is as good as my Lithuanian!

Stayed a single night in a hotel there once en route from Tallin to Kaunas. My impression was it was populated mainly by trolley busses.

    I think I prefer Talilin
  • tallinn and vilnius are both quality. if you tell me why you are going i can maybe point you somewhere. i wasnt on a stag do i was just travelling eastern europe last summer, but i do go out on the piss quite a bit, so maybe i can help. the uzipus district in vilnius is particularly good!will postmore on return from work.

    Mark, thanks for that.

Not sure what part we are staying, but know it will be central. Booked by a travel agent mate.

It is a stag do, but I would like to think that we have a bit of class as oppossed to Brits on the pish.

  • Right Riscardo, here's what i can remember.
It's a nice city, but watch out for the prostitutes! if you are after sightseeing there is an awesome Frank Zappa mural-monument thats well worth a look. There are numerous weird statues around, cant remember them though, apart from a bizarre upsid-down question mark. as i said this morning there is a district called the Uzipus district, it was made by a rebel group of junkies and pissheads, they have some art and even their own rules. rumour has it on april fools day they have a fake guard at the entrance dressed up as a member of the soviet union stamping yor passport on entry! also, if you are interested in the KGB's history, there's a KGB ttorture museum.

That's all the sights really. to be honest apart from the zappa monument the best thing is the beer! Kalanapolis Grand came ranked number one out of the 74 i tasted during my time in eastern europe!its a seriously good beer!and also the Svyturys is quite special too. if theres any vegetarian amongst you theres a great cheap vege restaurant. its a real cheap place, regular bars a pound a pint, nightclubs well they are uk prices worldwide!

    have a good trip.
  • o yes...the women are divine.
  • Went there with 10,000 Scotsmen 7/8 years ago. It was freezing but we were made very welcome by the locals. We found a reasonable restaurant although I agree with the earlier post that the food isn't much to write home about. The beer was good and the women very friendly.
