We fielded 21 players today. No wonder Pompey couldn't compete

Decent performance and win. A clean sheet too.1
-
The fact we seemingly still haven't played our presumed first XI together and yet looked very comfortable against a Portsmouth side that treated it like a league game is very reassuring. We managed to give minutes to 21 players today and get a win and a clean sheet ticks a lot of boxes I'm sure7

That was much better. Ramsey, Coventry and Campbell the stand outs for me but everybody did well.7
-
Very satisfying performance. Just hope we can play like this next week.0
-
Great result but as it's Portsmouth it's a terrible benchmark.7

It looked like Docherty tried to lead the players over to clap the fans in the Jimmy Seed Stand until someone pointed out to him that the home fans were in the Covered End! 🤪🤪🤪34

night and day from last week. I enjoyed that, now down to the business end, maintaining intensity, form and standards across the long season ahead.2

A far better performance all round than last week's.0

That was disappointing. Wycombe put 4 past them last week 😂4

The Wimbledon performance still sits in the back of mind, because consistency coupled with playing poorly against the teams you think we should ‘dominate’ - has been an issue of ours for a long while now.
But overall hard not to be quite satisfied with that performance.Jones argued that the team coming out of the transfer window would be stronger, and it’s hard not to argue with that in my opinion.
I still worry about our depth in midfield, and if Coventry and one of Docherty/Anderson/Berry were injured at the same time. But feels like we are sorted up top, especially with Leaburn coming back - Kanu could see himself as 6th choice striker which seems very harsh as I really rate him.If Potts or someone else of quality can come in and make Gillesphey back up I’d be happy.
Mannion has seemed solid to me, and definitely an improvement on AMB and Isted - so if we get someone of better quality then him to be number one - then hopefully it will be a strong season.1 -
I’m not getting carried away because (a) it’s a pre season friendly and (b) Portsmouth were shit. But …
1 impressed with our levels of fitness
2 impressed with our pressing game
3 impressed with our movement
4 impressed with the quality of the balls into the box
5 Particularly impressed with Edwards. That boy has a left peg
6 A clean sheet win
All we have to do is take that performance into the new season and be consistent over 46 games and we’ll be there or there abouts. Now, where’s that season ticket application form 👀2 -
People should not expect to much from Leaburn. He is comming background a serious operational it will take time for him to get fit. He may not be the play he was before the injury, so let's not pile on the pressure and expectation.

Perhaps it’s Wimbledon and Swindon that should be in the Championship and Portsmouth in League 24 -
Much better performance albeit against s weakened Pompey. Clean sheet.
Even Coventry had a decent game although he does like a backward/sideways pass even when unmarked. Lack of spacial awareness?
When did the lightweight winger turn into the beast of a forward that is Tyreece Campbell? Chuks looked up for it in his cameo and Ahadme seemingly over his niggle. Kanu dangerous.
Special shout to the 'Red Army' kids at the north end of the West Stand. Most vociferous fans all match.5 -

If we win .. Yay, Championship here we come, make Jones MOTY right now, New owners are gods.

Good all round performance by the starting 11. I’m being very old fashioned but I would prefer 442. We have two very good full backs and effective centre backs. Putting some one like Small into midfield would bolster our midfield and offer greater attacking threat particularly at home.1

I’m away so couldn’t go or watch on Charlton TV, so:
How did Mannion do?
Did Mitchell, Jones and Macca look strong individually as well as collectively?

Much better experience than last week. Mind you I doubt very much that Wigan will be as bad as Portsmouth next week.
Their free gift goalkeeper is the actual captain. Big mistake.

I thought Mitchell, Jones and Gillesphey all had good games. Gillesphey is always going to be the least solid of the three but he’s a different type of defender to the other two.6 -
That was very encouraging today. Special mentions go to TC, Coventry and Ramsey. Also thought Small looked good when he came on as did young Zach Mitchell who looked very assured. Mannion didn't have much to do and you can see what we've been working on in training.
Roll on Wigan and 3 points. COYR!6 -
Last week and this week was like chalk and cheese. We were very good today , our closing down was superb. Love the look of Edwards and Ramsey as wing backs and Thomas was superb. Pompey were awful though and i can't see that team winning many games in The Championship.3
