Former Goalkeeper Albert Uytenbogaardt, has sadly died at the age of 94.
Born in Cape Town in 1930, he joined Charlton Athletic in October 1948, and was a long term understudy to Sam Bartram, making his league debut on the 18/12/1948 at home to Stoke City.
He was, until his death, the oldest living former Addick.

Played for the Addicks at a good level and lived a long life.
He won life’s lottery. RIP0 -

In a game for Charlton 'A' side* against Folkestone in 1950, Uytenbogaardt became the first ever Charlton Goalkeeper to score a goal**. He later recounted, "I kicked the heavy, wet ball and must have caught it correctly because it just flew, and with the assistance of a slight side wind it bounced once, went over the goalkeeper's head and went straight into the net. The funny thing about my goal was that our forward [Eddie Firmani] was running so fast to get to the ball that he couldn't stop and once he followed it past the line the only thing he could do was grab on to the net, and that's when the whole thing collapsed on him!"
RIP Albert.
*Sam Bartram was still monopolising the first team goalkeeper position at that time.
** Dimitar Mitov has since replicated this feat.

Had a good innings, RIP. I hope the Wrexham hype does not ignore this and he gets a minutes silence or clapping tomorrow1

RIP - saw him on the few occasions Bartram was not available. A huge presence and today would have walked into our present team without a challenge2

A good candidate for a minute's applause. Amazing dedication to stick with the club so long as a deputy.
Part of me thinks we should commemorate him by making a statue and putting it outside the West Stand in place of Sam once every two seasons.

We are saddened to learn of Albert Uytenbogaard passing. V231 of our club. Our thoughts are with Albert’s family. We had planned to honour Albert at his home in South Africa with a CAFC honor cap which was already under production. We will now present this to his family.6

Was fortunate enough to meet him in 2005 at the centenary party when we carried a crossbar from East St to the Valley. People took turns and I was lucky enough to share duties with the big man himself.7 -

Always sad when one our living history passes away.
But it had a good innings I hope he has left lots of fond memories to his family and thar declining numbers of Charlton supporters who saw him play.0 -
He was a good guy. I met him. But you can’t sensibly have a minute’s applause for someone who played six matches (especially when Sam didn’t get one).2
