This date will clash with the FA Cup quarter finals, be prepared to rebook you appointment.
  • I got flagged up “RED” last year and fortunately after some tests I was given all clear. I urge anyone over 40 to consider doing this. It’s simply not something we should ignore.

Correct - every time I am just below amber - history in my family makes me high risk - I open the email each year with trepidation, but if it’s found early, the treatment is not invasive

I was green a couple of years ago but at 48, and with my father having had this, I reckon I should get myself checked out. Thanks for the alert @Lordflashheart - all booked up for a bit of peace of mind hopefuly
  • If your father, grandfather or both have had Prostate cancer you need to take a test.

It’s a simple blood test, takes seconds

Cheers for flagging, it’s a fantastic event. I think probably best waiting to when there’s some co-ordinated announcement, you say £30 but in recent years the fan contribution has been £15 and the shortfall fundraised, so wouldn’t want anyone discouraged on costing.

That event is still nearly 5 months away and I urge any man with even the slightest concern not to wait till then and arrange an appointment with their GP.
Surely it's free at the docs ?

Not that I am aware of - maybe over a certain age perhaps - only prostate test I have had at doctor was the rather uncomfortable version …..

Believe so but you are only invited once you reach a certain age.

It’s free at the GP and if you’re concerned ask for a PSA blood test.

There is no age to be invited, Chris Hoy made a bit of a fool of himself when he said he was going to ask the NHS to drop the age for Prostate cancer testing because at the moment there is no compulsory testing in place

It is but it’s not part of any screening programme. You’d need to ask your GP for the test, who in all likelihood is not likely to refuse if you’re over let’s say 50. Below that I’d suspect you’d need to provide symptoms like for example nocturia. It’s worth noting that a raised PSA level isn’t an indicator of Prostate Cancer. It simply means that the prostate gland is enlarged. This is the main reason why even though around 12k men die each year from Ca Prostate, the PSA test does not form part of any prostate gland screening programme.

Hardly think he made a fool of himself.  Whilst the NHS doesn’t routinely test, men aged 50 and over can request a test from their GP.  It’s this age limit that Chris is suggesting be lowered to try and catch the disease earlier.

That's maybe but Tracey Leaburn organises it in memory of her father who died from prostate cancer. The Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer charity makes it possible and the £30 donation is a small price to pay as a thank you for all that Tracey does for our club.

Might be worth mentioning that the same charity offers home testing (ie you take your own blood sample and send it off) for £27.99. I've used this before, prompted by Tracey's initiative, and it was very efficient. I'm just about due a retest so will do it this way.

I'll do the other half and we're sorted 👍

    Hi All,
I have spoken to BKPCA and asked them why they have put £30 to book a test. I fundraise to cover half of the testing costs, so it should be £15 to book. They have made an error and will reduce the price down. Also those that have already paid £30 will be refunded the £15 next week.
My fundraising event next year is to do a half marathon!!!
    You’re some women!
Right behind you………well alongside you maybe halfway with a bottle of water? Or at the end with a bottle of bubbly 🍾🍾😘😘😘😘😘😘💪🏻💪🏻

As someone who is in remission myself, found by pure chance just over 2 years ago, I implore all to get checked, its a few minutes, and could save your life.

  • Booked my test last night, yes it’s 5 months away but it’s good to know.
My last test was a fairly high 5.9 and just an amber warning almost certainly because of my age (78).

If you are Afro-Caribean you are at greater risk of developing CaP therefore if you request a PSA at 45 you should get it free at the GP's.
If you have a strong family history father/brother dying at an early age (in Ca Prostate terms any age before?70) you should also get it free at the Gp's.
Older men should get it on request.

PSA is contained in the cells of the prostate. Some of this leaks into the bloodstream and can be measured.
If you have a large prostate the reading will be higher ( without any cancer being present). Older men tend to have higher readings as they develop Benign  Prostatic Hypertrophy (non cancerous enlargement of the prostate) often associated with difficult in peeing/weak stream dribbling etc etc.
If you are a bike rider the impact on the prostate will damage the cells and increase the reading (without cancer being present).
Similar for "exotic" fun/  surgery to./And infections of prostate all raise the pSA.
Finally the  cancer cells leak more  into the bloodstream than normal prostate cells, raising the reading.

So a raised PSA could be any of the above or a combination of them. Further investigation is required.

    Thanks @Tracey

just got confirmation of the £15 refund so they are on it already 👍
  • Very good BBC Radio 4 programme "Inside Health" on screening for Ca P prompted by Chris Hoy's bad news.

Hope you are doing well DA9, I was diagnosed with high PSA back in March, my biopsy showed that 22 of the 24 cores they removed contained cancer and it was about to break out of my Prostate and spread. I had surgery to remove it in May and have recovered fairly well.

My high PSA was found on a routine blood test, I had no symptoms so I also encouraged anyone reading this to get tested, especially if you’re dad or grandad had prostate cancer

I thought you weren't very positive of late, this may well explain it.
I had mine out last July, so things do get better.
    All the best.

Thanks CE, appreciate it, long may our PSA blood tests be undetectable 👍🏻
