The Best that Never Was (Charlton Academy)

Over the years the Charlton Academy has continued to produce Addick starters, England Internationals (Jermaine Defoe, Scott Parker, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa) and even a Ballon d'Or nominee (Ademola Lookman). Has there been an Academy product that you thought was the next Wayne Rooney or Frank Lampard that never quite lived up to their hype or potential? Or ever put on a first team shirt?

Diego Poyet, first name that comes to mind. I thought he was going to have an incredible playing career, especially after that initial season in our first team.35

I was annoyed when Sean McGinty left for Man Utd but he didn’t go on to the career I thought he would.2
-
Neil McCafferty, called into the first team squad at 16, away to Man Utd. Was going to be Charlton’s answer to Posh & Becks, when he teamed up with Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud.
Never made a first team appearance.13 -
Sarmiento and Ramazani are two in recent times who were highly touted but left before playing for us.1
-
Archie Edwards... Left-Back
Turned down a move to Man Utd if I remember rightly to stay with us, was highly rated alongside Tarieq Holmes-Dennis but never managed to breakthrough7 -
Tamer Tuna5

I thought Semi Ajayi would be offered longer than a 6 month contract and was disappointed when he left.
Kasey Palmer I thought would go on to bigger things than a Championship player.
The first lad I remember hearing about on the radio as being poached was taken off us by Spurs in the 1990's I reckon. Ford maybe? Assumed he would be a star when he joined Spurs but he disappeared without trace.
Recently Adigun I thought would become a regular for us.2 -
I take offence to the first line which includes the words "addicks starters" and "Jermaine Defoe".Addick_in_Exile said:Over the years the Charlton Academy has continued to produce Addick starters, England Internationals (Jermaine Defoe, Scott Parker, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa) and even a Ballon d'Or nominee (Ademola Lookman). Aaron Henry, just hasn't kicked on from the hype he had coming through. Will probably have a decent EFL career but expected more when he broke through4

Me too. It's Jermain. 😀golfaddick said:

I remember there being a lot of hype around Mark DeBolla but he never made an appearance. Josh Wright is another one who was supposed to be the future of our midfield but never got above Championship level before losing interest4
-
I thought Emeka Ifijiagwa and The Vin Nguyen would go on to have very decent careers. Also the youngster (for the life of me I can’t think of his name) that mugged Barry Bannan.0

Fulham poached Tammy Abraham’s brother Timmy from us, looking him up he’s 23 and playing for Tonbridge Angels in the 6th tier.
Ryan Huddart was a GK Arsenal poached from us, but he went on to have a career in non-league.2 -
Mark Wright (does he count) only got to play 15 minutes of an FA Cup game for CrawleyGarrymanilow said:I remember there being a lot of hype around Mark DeBolla but he never made an appearance. Was Joe Pigott ever hyped up?

Spurs lad was Owen Price.Athletico Charlton said:I thought Semi Ajayi would be offered longer than a 6 month contract and was disappointed when he left.

Ford is probably you remembering Simon Ford who was in our academy around the same time.

I take offence 'Scott Parker' being named in that list. One of those players that never lived up to their hype or potential as a Charlton Legend.golfaddick said:

Talk about Addicks in Exile!0 -
In our youth team we had Solly, Wagstaff and Shelvey. We also had a centre forward who West Ham nicked off us. He looked really lively, for the life of me I cannot remember his name.5

I know some coaches/managers that were in the non league / pro youth set up when Piggott was coming through and they never rated him. Always said he looked good at youth level because of his size but technically very poor. Fair play to him he's had a decent pro careerJustFloydRoad said:Was Joe Pigott ever hyped up?5 -

The fact Carl Jenkinson (who has made an England appearance) is not on your list (and Jermaine Defoe, and Scott Parker is) I would say is a failure. Came back the other day and there was no comment, by the sky commentator at least, that he was affiliated with Charlton. Guess he didn't burst onto the scene in the same way Micah Richards did.0

In recent years the one that really suprised me was Charlie Barker. He didnt look out of place when he played in our 1st team when we went through that terrible injury crisis. I thought he was nailed on to progress through to our 1st team as a regular11

To be fair he's playing regularly for a team in our league so he's "made it" just not with usAndyG said:In recent years the one that really suprised me was Charlie Barker. Has anyone mentioned Jordan Ibe?0
-
Loads and loads over the years, a few that pop into the mind. Yado Mambo, Tamer Tuna, Alex Stavrinou, Archie Edwards, Ben Davidson, Bradley Jordan, Aaron Barnes, Ade Azeez, Josh Umerah, Tariq Holmes-Dennis. Just to name a few I thought would at least make it with us!3

Was a Vietnamese boat boy many years ago, Da Vin Nguyen ( sic ). Story at the time was that he was going to be a superstar. Was then discovered he wasn’t 13 years old, he was 16. That changed everything. Maybe someone on here can confirm if that’s true as it was a rumour.
Jermaine Darlington was another. Manager at the time chose Millwall away for his debut as a 16 year old. Again, I’m not sure how much is true and how much is rumour.0 -
Yeah I mentioned The Vin Nguyen further up the thread. Saw him a few times playing for the reserves when the games were at Welling and thought he would go on to good things.masicat said:Was a Vietnamese boat boy many years ago, Da Vin Nguyen ( sic ). Think there was some doubting his legal status to be in the country but not sure of the details.
Think Mark Tivey also made his debut with Jermaine Darlington in that Millwall match.1 -
I thought Josh Umerah and Brandon Hanlon would both go on to do more than they have. Also years ago felt that Charlie McDonald would be a star.
And then there was Toby Stevenson, scored a hat-trick on debut - not bad for a defender - went off to Watford and then disappeared without trace.3 -

Danny Uchechi also known as Chima Orelaja.pettgra said:In our youth team we had Solly, Wagstaff and Shelvey. We also had a centre forward who West Ham nicked off us. He looked really lively, for the life of me I cannot remember his name.
Was really good on one of the Football Manager games.1
