There can't be many matchday announcers who went on to become an MP...

RIP.
I love the link in the article to the video of the 1969 Charlton vs Portsmouth game where pre-match entertainment consisted of a camel and elephant from Chessington Zoo being paraded around the ground and gymnasts going through their routine on the pitch. Apparently Charlton missed a penalty and someone amongst the fans was reputed to have shouted "Bring on the f*****g camel".3 -

Met him many years ago when he was running a stall at Plumstead Make Merry on Plumstead Common. Very friendly man.

A very good, proper constituency MP, a man you would often see out & about in the area.

It is very unusual for a MP to retain a seat against their former Party in one election , John achieved this twice. He really must have been a good constituency MP who genuinely had a strong personal vote.
In my view his first SDP victory was assisted because Labour imported Audrey Wise a hard left former MP who had no links to the area as their candidate .
His subsequent win was against the strong locally backed John Austin who then came back to claim the seat back for Labour in 1992 although Cartwright was only 2.5k votes short of achieving an unlikely hat trick of victories.3 -
