Good afternoon one and all...

So, we go again in the league today with the visit of Mansfield Town to The Valley of Dreams for a rather intriguing mid table clash against a side who are on a run of five straight league defeats, two places and one point above the Addicks, so how's this one gonna end, with my rose tinted's on I predict we will be 3 points better off come 5pm...🤞

As the saying goes...Hope (Charlton) is a dangerous thing...Hope (Charlton) can drive a man insane...🤪

We've clashed on five previous occasions, winning three and the remaining two fixtures resulting in draws, The Addicks claimed an emphatic 5-0 victory when the sides last met in an FA Cup first-round replay at The Valley in November 2018, so a pretty scant playing history it must be said.

Today's matchday is the club's annual Christmas Spirit Day...

So, here we go...

Team info..

Conor Coventry returns to the starting line-up for today’s game as Nathan Jones makes three changes from the team that secured a point on the road at Lincoln City last Saturday.

Thierry Small and Matty Godden, who both played in midweek against Leyton Orient, also start with Josh Edwards, Greg Docherty and Gassan Ahadme moving to the substitutes bench.

The selection means there is also a 50th Charlton appearance for Lloyd Jones, who will wear the captain’s armband this afternoon, while Will Mannion returns to the substitutes bench after a spell on the sidelines.

If the Addicks set up as they did last weekend it would mean Alex Mitchell, Lloyd Jones and Macaulay Gillesphey playing in a back three in front of Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Tyreece Campbell and Thierry Small would operate as wing-backs, with Coventry joining Terry Taylor and Karoy Anderson in midfield behind Daniel Kanu and Godden.

Mannion, Edwards, Docherty and Ahadme are joined on the bench by Luke Berry, Allan Campbell and Miles Leaburn.

Charlton: Maynard-Brewer; A.Mitchell, Jones (c), Gillesphey; T.Campbell, Coventry, Taylor, Anderson, Small; Kanu, Godden

Subs: Mannion, Edwards, Docherty, A.Campbell, Berry, Ahadme, Leaburn

  • Can I say it’s just The Valley , nothing else.

Never has been and never will be Dreams, Theatre, or whatever else you want to put on the end of it.

    The Valley.
  • Mansfield coming to the Valley with defeats in their last 5 games. What normally happens?

Didn’t realise Mansfield had lost their last five league games. We all know what happens next.

Hopefully in the first half we can accidentally put together a decent move or a Mansfield defender will fall over or something and we can finally get a goal before the second half. Might be nice that

Pretty much the source of my optimism :)

  • Only Mitchell and Godden starting who were not with us last season. This is a true sign of how poor our summer recruitment was.

Oh joy, we're going back to the Tyreece Campbell wing back experiment again. Has no-one told Nathan that trying that last season almost totally broke the kid?

So compared to Lincoln where we played 3-5-2 with Gillesphey, Jones, Mitchell - Edwards, Taylor, Anderson, Docherty, TC - Kanu, Ahadme

We have instead replaced Edwards with Small, Docherty with Coventry and Ahadme with Godden.

Pretty much Nathan Jones's game plan

I wonder if TT has been practising those FK’s ?
His midweek effort (for their second goal) will live long in the memory.
  • Can't see why Potts isn't at least on the bench if not starting instead of Gillesphey...
  • Pleased Small is back in the side. For all his weakness, feel like he at least offers something which we have been lacking with his ability to carry the ball up the pitch and actually get crosses into the box.

He has tried him as a striker, as a 10 and as a wingback. None worked. Tyreece is a winger.
  • They asked and Jones listened. There's a goalkeeper on the bench.

Two interesting things for me there, Mannion doesn’t come straight into the squad and that’s two very attacking wingbacks

Jones going with Small and TC to pepper the box with crosses for... Godden and Kanu to win in the air.

    Nice.

Edit: All jokes aside, I'll take that starting line up, REG is limited going forwards and with no other substitute may as well go with TCampbell to at least be half a winger. Small came out of midweek in credit.

Godden seems to be our only goal scoring forward and Kanu will work his nuts off.

TC and Small are at least capable of going forward as wing backs, whether they will or not is another story and if they do they’re on their own as no one else is coming wide to overlap and give them options (yet equally no one will be in the box to cross to).

Looks like a 4-5-1/4-3-3 for Mansfield if I had to guess

    Hewitt - Oshilaja - Cargill - Bowery

    Lewis - Reed - Baccus

    Akins - Evans - Blake-Tracy

& yes they do play a no. 9 shirt at full back… one for @Garrymanilow

I hope Mannion is being eased back in cause if he’s fully fit then he surely starts

Shows how badly things have gone when at the start of the season you'd expect our best starting XI to involve pretty much the entirety of today's bench

Ahadme on for the last 10 when Small and TC have been subbed off, to run at those knackered defenders.
