Annual Memorial Day - January 4th- Reading [h]

The club’s annual memorial will take place on Saturday, January 4th ahead of Charlton's Sky Bet League One fixture against Reading at The Valley.

Ahead of kick-off in SE7, supporters, players and officials from both clubs will remember the Charlton and Reading fans that were lost in the year of 2024 with a period of applause.

You can submit the names of your loved ones, friends and colleagues for the memorial by emailing memorial@cafc.co.uk or calling 020 8333 4000 by 12pm on Wednesday, January 1st.

The full list of names can be found in Valley Review, the official matchday programme, and will also be shown on the big screen during the tribute.

All of the names which have appeared in the Obituaries section of the matchday programme's personals page since the last memorial in January 2024 will automatically be added to the list, as will the names of supporters whose ashes have been scattered in The Valley's Memorial Garden during 2024.

Any names to be added to the list, please let me know to pass on to the club if you haven't done so already or just want to double check they are there.

    Deadline is 31 December.

Henry can you please check that Simone White is included?
I asked the club and requested confirmation but haven't received one.
    Thank-you.

Just a reminder that this is happening today.

Hopefully Janet Jarvis' name will be there, my mother in law's sister and part of a Charlton supporting family including season ticket holders.  Only just seen Henry's December offer ... bugger!!!

Wishes to all who will have a name up there including Covered End and Lancashire Lad

Janet Jarvis is on the list. There is a photo on the other thread from the programme.

The club should never included the Charlie Wright in with the annual Memorial Day. The ref blows for end of the applause with the list on N of the surnames.

Very poor management of the Memorial names.

Thought that was a shambles today . Surely it doesn’t take much to ask the ref to start the game once all the names had scrolled . At least the crowd still clapped even if the players and officials didn’t .

It’s a brilliant idea, farcical execution today and felt quite disrespectful.

Thought the ref needed to exercise some common sense and not blow his whistle before the list had finished.

Ref and common sense are rarely seen
  • Either no one told the ref about the scrolling names and he hadn't noticed them meaning it was a club officials fault, or the ref inexplicably blew part way through which would be hugely disrespectful.

Either way it was very clumsy and if one of my close families names was scrolling after the whistle was blown I would have been very upset.  Hopefully a lesson learnt for next season at least.

I rather wished our players had had the gumption to remain where they were and ignore the whistle but hard to do that once Reading players had broken off.

Agreed. Charlie Wright’s passing should have had a separate minute’s silence -  applause at the Wycombe home game

Normally the list is timed from start to finish in 60 seconds. He seemed to start it from when Charlie was mentioned
  • An utter shambles. Reflects really badly on the club and how little thought went into the organisation.

    Very disappointed today.

The ref was an arsehole.  I had 2 people on there whom I knew very well and thought "what the fuck was he blowing the whistle halfway through". Both of those names ended in R and T, so I was well annoyed. All the Ref had to do was to look at the names rolling down and wait until the last one is finished.  It is not rocket science and common sense. My best friend was on the board and I had 2 people who came along especially and one worked with him.  The laat thing we wanted to do was watch a game of football start without seeing our names. The couldn't believe how bad the ref was during the game and the lino (but that was for another thread).

Thinks you are aiming at the wrong target.

The ref was briefed pre-game and even told how long it would take for the names to scroll down on the screen.

He was also "asked" to bring the players out at 2.52pm so as to give time for all the remembrance stuff to happen. Players came out at 2.54pm.

Didn't occur to me that the ref could be such an idiot...

A common complaint about referees in general is that they have no feel for the game having never played it at a professional level.

To that we can now add that yesterday's referee has no compassion or feel for humanity.

Even if the club had made a boo-boo by including the Charlie Wright tribute at the beginning, therefore extending the agreed time required for the memorial, it surely can't have been that difficult for the ref to show a bit of common sense and let the names finish scrolling on the screen before blowing his whistle and allowing the teams to disperse.

I was uncomplimentary about the ref at the time on the match thread and my opinion of him hint changed since.

Simple, he simply adds another 2 mins and kicks of 2 minutes later. For Fuck Sake, people have died and are still grieving. It is not like our game kicking of 2 mins later than anyone else affects fuck all to everybody else. It is not the last game of the season. Our game doesn't affect the outcome of the league position. It would never happen in the premier league. Sorry Golf, you are wrong on this one an I found yesterday very disrespectful. I think he actually blew up when the names were between G and L I think. It was nowhere near finished.

In fairness to Golfie, I don't think he's being supportive of the ref here, just pointing out that the club tried to allow enough time for the various remembrance stuff to be done, and were partly stymied by the ref not bringing the players out on time. But as you point out it's hardly an issue if it had delayed the start, as after all it'd not be the first time we've kicked off late.

And given it's been a running sore for the likes of me and Golfie that our home matches never kick off on time - 3:04pm has probably been the common start time over the last couple of years - another late start yesterday woukdn't have been out of the ordinary and, on this occasion, justified.

No idea where people get their info from on what time the players were asked to come outside etc.  BUT it must also be possible the players didn’t comply / rush to get out etc I would think ?

Regardless the ref being mindful of his surroundings / the screen isn’t really a big ask and difficult to excuse or explain.

The referee had no respect or common decency. How many times have we kicked off late this season, for 1 reason or another,
another 2 minutes to let the names go past would have made no difference whatsoever.
I will email the EFL with a similar complaint, don't expect a response, or a meaningful reply from them.

The ref was obviously the main culprit but the wording in the announcement was odd and a bit clumsy too, as he made it sound like the applause was solely for Wright, whilst some names were being displayed.
