Back in the late 90’s before Mills came to Charlton, my wife was an adoption social worker working for Bromley. One of her client couples were interested in adopting a young disabled boy from Norfolk. My wife had to go to Norfolk on many occasions to facilitate this. This included frequent meetings with the foster parents who were fervent Norwich City supporters. They told my wife that Danny Mills was fantastic with the young kid. Always taking time to talk to him after a game, getting autographs from both teams for him and on many occasions taking him for a kickabout in the car park after a game.

Mills gets a lot of stick on here but there was clearly another side to him.

And then the following weekend, Wednesday fans managed to convince the whole stadium that Everton were leading at The Dell. I miss those pre-mobile phone days, when we were reliant on the likes of Headphones Norm to let us know what was happening elsewhere.

Shouldn't have gone down that year. Don't recall us nicking any points that we didn't deserve, but we certainly had plenty of games where we didn't get what we deserved.

I agree, we should not have gone down - but the end result was a great season in The Championship and Sir Bobby presenting the trophy at a packed Valley. I would not have swapped that for staying up (knowing now that when we bounced back it would be for 7 years!).

Yep, that one at home, and Liverpool away when we scored to go 3-1 up and the ref disallowed it to give us a freekick instead.

If I remember correctly that was a mid-week and it was bitterly cold. My two shared a season ticket that first season in the Prem and my eldest was wrapped up like Michelin Man! I think that was the game when a steaker ran from the Covered End to the JS and 3,000 Villa fans sang "What the f*cking hell was that!"

Very sloppy of Cawley in the article to state that we bought Andy Hunt with some of the money we made from Mills - they'd played together in the 98-99 first season on the prem (plus Andy was a free agent).

Nevertheless, it was a great bit of business selling Mills and buying Deano (plus, later in the season, Shields, Svensson). You can't expect to keep every player when you go down

I never took to Neil Redfearn thought he looked overweight and disinterested, until I met him in my then local barbers. This was late enough in the season it was pretty clear we were getting relegated.
Ian the barber (a gooner) straight away told him I'm a Charlton fan.
NR was actually built like a brick shithouse. He seemed quite a quiet sort, took Ian's mickey taking in good heart. He was fairly forthright about why the season remained such a struggle not least that after about 15 years as an attacking/playmaker midfielder Curbishley mostly gave him defensive/spoiler responsibilities, with any attacking reserved for wingers. I took it with a pinch of salt at the time as "he would say that wouldn't he cos he doesn't fancy the hard work". Keith Jones was the 'engine roomer' at the time.
The fact his family didn't settle with him down South can't have helped.
Curbs's autobiography only mentions NR arriving for £1M and leaving at the end of the season for £250k, nothing else.
