39 career appearances since 2020, 2 goals. Make of that what you will…

Never heard of him. Some nice plaudits from Boro fans but I’m being cautious and basing it of limited appearances.

He’s certainly does not appear an ‘oven ready’ arrival. He started 4 games for Swindon at the start of the 21/23 season L2 before being moved back to the subs bench where he’s largely been an unused sub.

Since then at Boro in three seasons he’s started just 2 league games at the end of last season, 2 EFL cup games and an FA Cup game.

He’s never done 90 mins in a league game in his career yet.

However, attacking players are about impact, and if he can make things happen in 60 min / 30 min blocks, then that will be a positive addition.

4th club now for him at 23. He really looks like he needs somewhere to settle and cement a place in a side as it’s not happened yet.
He certainly needs games, at his age the number of appearances made is very poor.

My stomach dropped when I read "Charlton sign Alex Gilbey". I must remember to put my reading glasses on when I pick up my phone  :|

Dodgy touch in the build up but an emphatic finish from the edge of the box

347 minutes for Boro is it?
Yet again, I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I can't help having a feeling he might turn out ok.

All fair comments but similar could, and possibly were, have been said about Cullen when he joined.

Is it Alex Gilbey in disguise?
  • Happy with that, position we needed, player a Championship club's fans seem to rate.

    Fingers crossed he's good!

    And Ramsey to some extent.

People will have their views, and rightly so, but until he plays a run of games it will be hard to tell what his impact will be.

Great option to have coming off the bench until hes fully up to speed and can do 90mins.
Plenty of times this season we wanted someone in his mould coming on, and we ended up with KA coming on.
Saying that, i really like KA, but just not what we have needed sometimes at certain points in a game to come off the bench.

Always take comments from other fans with a pinch of salt when it's about a player who hasn't had many minutes for them. We are always guilty of overrating those who aren't in the team currently.

Great to address one of the biggest issues in our squad though and he does sound like someone with a lot of potential so I'm happy.

We should definitely wait to judge a player until they play for Charlton, unless it can be spun as underwhelming in which case, go for it!

Manager Nathan Jones commented: "I'm delighted to have him. We’ve been looking to add more quality in the final third and Alex provides that. He comes with decent pedigree having played in a very good Championship side this season, who trust us to further his development.

"We don’t really like taking players on loan, but when an opportunity comes up to add real quality, like this, the transfer kitty has all been spent on the SMT we have to take it."  :)

Will reserve judgement until I see him play a few times. Actually going on Saturday so will hopefully see him in the flesh.

However, I doubt he'll be starting many games atm & being aged 23 and only having made 39 appearances since 2020 it doesn't scream "quality" at this stage.

    Exactly.

I’m going to say ‘the proof will be in the pudding’ just so that @Henry Irving can correct me :-)

He looks a left footer in attack. I hope he's not replacing another one who has excelled for us in attack.

You went to a grammar school, I went to a comp.

Education was clearly wasted on you 😉

It sounds quite promising, but I've had to learn to wait until I've see a new signing. I'm the man who thought Chris Dickson would go on to be a Ballon d'Or winner before the being confronted with the terrible reality.

We’ve had so many loan signings with this sort of profile , the overwhelming majority of which have turned out to be not just not good, but completely useless.

Glad we’ve at least attempted to add an attacking midfielder to the squad, but judgement very much reserved on this one

They clearly have spent a big portion of the window trying to get him so you’d hope he can deliver

Trying to look on the positive side, the last "young player, lots of potential but not settled" type we signed was Small and that's worked pretty well so far, albeit it took time to get him acclimatised and that was a permanent not a loan.

Still he ticks the boxes in terms of style/positions we needed cover so cautiously optimistic here. Jones has a decent record of developing younger players so here's hoping.

Is he competition for Berry? If so good. Berry not involved enough for me. Is Gilbert better? We'll see

He’s hardly played any first team football, and has never played a full 90 minutes in his career (that seems pretty crazy by 23 years old), so I would take the views of fans of other clubs he’s been at with a massive pinch of salt.
