MI5 v MI6 at the Valley was one of the most surreal matches: It took part in the late 1950's though there are no official records of the match ever happening.
The only spectators allowed in were folk with a special pass or handshake.
The referee was the guy who later in his life when on his death bed became a Whistle blower and revealed all from his notebook. This was denied by both the secret service and SIS. He said the score was 0-0 as both teams had good defensive set ups in man for man marking and observance. Also no floodlights were allowed to be on in the 2nd half as darkness fell and special glasses were worn. The ball was played on the deck and no hoof ball occured; Agent 3 for MI5 found this very difficult.
MI5 were all listed as 'A Trialist'; They all wore masks which impacted on their heading ability. The Keeper used binoculars and took copious amount of notes when the ball was in the other half. Keep your Ed Upson was heard but this was obviously a fictional name and more to do with motivation.
The MI6 team wore beanie hats and had blacked* up. SIS had Global aliases with the number 9 being Johnny Foreigner, Juan Eater 5 the CB with the single tooth, plus the 7 was Brook Bond who was an ex tea leaf who was converted into being a spy and was successful in getting young Russian or East German women to reveal all; Bond always played with a smile on his face.
In my research I found out the MI6 keeper was of German descent and his name was 'careless' Hans schadenfreude; back in the 50's he was laughed at.
The valley of spies was indeed a bizarre event.
* The black and white minstrels were very popular in the late 50's and no racist intent was perceived.

There’s some info on this link, also a game Charlton played against the British Olympic team and one against their triallists.
http://www.englandfootballonline.com/matchrsl/MatchRslAm3.html
After losing 4-3 at home to Millwall on the opening day of the season, Charlton had gone 10 games undefeated. On this day, Charlton were away at Middlesbrough and lost 1-0. At the end of the game at the Valley, the announcer at the Valley gave the score from Teeside and said “ Oh well, can’t win them all.”
I feel very old!

This was announced before the game yesterday, but I couldn't hear the details properly, or the name of the person Brian Cole was talking to. I'm assuming now it was Darren Bent?0
