The problem he's got seems to be that he doesn't make small mistakes, when he gets it wrong it's often a real clanger of an error or at least it looks like one. 9 out of 10 passes could be fine but the 1 that goes to the oppo striker is the one that sticks in the memory.Chunes said:
Yeah, 100%. He's got some strengths to his game and he's decent enough, but he's still the weakest link in that back three.NabySarr said:I do agree he is perhaps overhated/slightly underrated and scapegoated at times. But I still don’t think he’s that good and think we can bring in better this summer1 -
The problem with him is his tendency to make a massive error. I think having Edwards next to him has helped massively as he’s very solid defensively and that gives MG less to do. He isn’t awful and he’s a tonne better than the three names mentioned above but he’s the outfield player who is the weakest link in the squad because he is unpredictable2

Possibly but Jones knows he is a decent player for this level and fans can go a bit overboard sometimes. I am perfectly happy when I see his name on the teamsheet. Much less so Watson and Edun, when we had him.fenaddick said:The problem with him is his tendency to make a massive error. You beauty! That is all7
-
Great header and looked much more solid the last couple of games. Hope he can continue to keep the mistakes away5
-
Very happy for him. You could tell he felt like he'd had a point to prove. Blackpool forgiven with interest10
-
If it hadn't been for the 2 or 3 occasions first half where he'd get upfield then play a shit pass that meant he was out of position for the counter, I'd agree. Forgive, but not with interest.Leuth said:Very happy for him. You could tell he felt like he'd had a point to prove. Blackpool forgiven with interest2 -
The less shakey of all the defence tonight and won his headers including the goal..2
-
Has improved as the season has gone on, great goal today and several good tackles and headed interceptions.2
-
Really pleased for him.
He deserved that.1 -

This is a fair point, but I would point out that against Stevenage on Saturday, there was a massive clanger dropped that set Stevenage through on goal and only AMB pulling off a superb interception stopped us going one nil down.fenaddick said:The problem with him is his tendency to make a massive error. But that clanger was dropped by Edwards, not Gillesphey. And everyone likes Edwards, so he’s forgiven quickly and it’s forgotten. Gillesphey has been unlucky that his errors often end up with goals against. He’s got a gaffe in him, for sure, but so have the rest of our defence.
People are a bit too quick to write him off as shit in my opinion.
PS I’m made up for him that he got the winner tonight. 👏🏼👏🏼9 -
Agree. Really pleased for him tonight. From the tv it seemed like he was reluctant to take the plaudits from the Covered End at the end of the game but his teammates pushed him forwards.lordromford said:

Credit where it’s due
a whole game without a serious error
that’s progress
his recent trajectory has been upward
a workinprogress
he’s still massively in debt on the goals conceded v scored/saved ledger
here’s to more games like today1 -
Amazing what a bit of competition can do. Thought some of his passing tonight was very good. Loved the squad pushing him out to the crowd at the end.2
-

Glad for him getting the goal- been getting some stick and living in Jones' shadow, but did good5 -
Delighted for him. Yes, he has a big mistake in him, and that's why he plays in league one, but his performances recently have been vastly improved overall.4
-
Possibly he's a victim of a bit of his own myth - everyone knows/says "he's got a massive mistake in him" so every time he makes any kind of error (even a relatively minor one) it gets elevated to Major Mistake instead of just being expected that even the best of L1 CBs are going to make the odd slip.
He's deserved that goal - and he's now scored just as many as L. Jones this season and has two more assists to his name as well.
Not going to win POTS but if there was a "most improved" award he'd surely be a shoe-in.13 -

Naby Sarr 2.0. Hated at first, before becoming good. Ping of a left foot, big mistake in him, stands over free kicks. Just awaiting the own goal at Wembley in May2
-
He needs to put in a stupid-good tackle-assist combo, score a goal where he wanders into the box in open play and actually score a free kick before we start talking Naby levels of aura

Macca was genuinely made up when we presented his MOM award. You could tell it meant a lot - and he spent some decent time chatting to my son. Said the spirit in the squad is the best he has ever been part of and all in all comes across as a thoroughly good bloke.40

Needs to match getting sent off inside the first minute.....Leuth said:He needs to put in a stupid-good tackle-assist combo, score a goal where he wanders into the box in open play and actually score a free kick before we start talking Naby levels of aura

I'm not sure how many of his mistakes have led to goals being conceded....Billy_Mix said:Credit where it’s due

Losing Us The Game Against Millwall (By Being Fouled) is his biggest cross to bear (although he played well and assisted our goal before that, nobody remembers that). Anyway Gillesphey isn't a true Charlton cult figure until he's screwed up against Millwallhoof_it_up_to_benty said:

Naby remains one of my favourite players - enjoyed watching him play.Leuth said:

Not heard that line before, hopefully it is true in this case.DamoNorthStand said:Macca was genuinely made up when we presented his MOM award. If it was him who gave away the penalty last night I'm sure there'd be plenty of noise on here about him being 'clumsy' and criticism 'yet another Gillesphey error'. Same if it was him who played the awful pass on Saturday that put Stevenage clean through (thankfully AMB made a superb save).
Yet because those instances were Ramsay and Edwards respectively there's very little criticism and more acceptance that sometimes these things happen, quite right too - its L1 after all. If we had players incapable of making errors they wouldn't be playing at this level.14
