For Pete's sake...

Can you name any footballers called Pete?

It seems that while Davids, Thomases and Williams get shortened to Dave, Tom and Bill, respectively, Peters seem to remain stoically disyllabic.

Messrs Shilton, Crouch, Lorimer, Beardsley, Bonetti and Croker were always Peters. Where are the Petes?

Schmeicel was always "Peter". I'm pretty sure Garland was much more often known as Peter than Pete.

  • Cheer Up Peter Reid.
  • And do all Matthews immediately become Matt or Matty on signing a professional football contract?

There have been some brilliant answers to the question "can you name a footballer named Peter?".

    Unfortunately...

I think you’ll find he was “much more often known as” Big Fat Pete!!  😉

Was at Notts County away years ago 3-3 draw and some wag threw a half eaten pie at him when he was warming up. He picked it up and carried on eating it.

Hes at the valley in the pre match hospitality areas and been told he is still a great laugh.

I loving some of the answers but unfortunately I don't think people are understanding the question.

Strange isn't it. How some names are automatically shortened whereas other aren't.

Slight tangent but our Robert Lee only seemed to get called Rob once he left us & went to Newcastle.

Apparently you can only shorten the name to Pete if he doesn’t run.

    Hitchin's Pete Moss

Didn't Phil Chapple transfer to Peteborough after leaving Charlton?
