The Football Association wants the three-match ban given to Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts for a dangerous challenge on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to be extended.
The FA said the standard three-game ban for serious foul play is "clearly insufficient" and has submitted a claim to a regulatory commission to increase it.

Don’t agree with this, he got the ball first and then the player, all part & parcel of the game, it wasn’t like a Ben Thatcher challenge.

It was an awful challenge. If the player never turned his face away from the high kick the injury would have been much worse than 25 stitches in his ear, it could have maimed him for life. Definitely deserves more than a 3 game ban.

agreed - it could have broke his neck - similar to the german keeper on the french player in 82 i think it was - it was a bad bad challenge which should have been a header - millwall should suck it up and so should the keeper - the let him die thing wasn't good either given the type of injury when most fans are normally showing genuine concern on both sides but guess there is benefit of the doubt with that - no question, the keeper should have a longer ban and he won't be doing it again

Couldn't disagree more. That challenge is not part & parcel of game. Think it's actually lucky the player only needed 25 stitches. Disgraceful movement from keeper to go in that fast and high.

It was reckless certainly. Why he didn't go for a header is hard to credit. There's no malice in it. Roberts's eyes were on the ball the whole time. Unpopular opinion: it's not even violent conduct, it's just really crap judgement. He's stupid, not evil or a cheat TC getting flyhacked from behind was a far worse offense in so much as it was premeditated foul play - TC not getting seriously injured was dumb luck - but there's no follow up, no tabloid frenzy outcry despite the unashamed intent of the perpetrator to cheat. The brouhaha is fuelled chiefly by the damage that resulted and how painful we imagine it is having your ear gashed open and then stitched back together. There's no surprise the FA is making a big fuss about this, cos it's tabloid fodder. Mentioning the conduct of the scumbags in the crowd in the same breath as Roberts is just dimwitted. The goalie ain't responsible for the bullshit spouted by the morons in the stands. Has anybody asked JP Mateta for his view?
It was an awful challenge with an awful outcome (26 stitches and admission to hospital) although it could have been worse. I am sure he didn't mean to do that damage but players need to know they have a responsibilty for the safety to other players and the best way to get that home to them is a longer ban. It needs to be long enough for them to think twice before going into a challenge like that.
Probably a fair amount. I agree there wasn't any malice in the tackle, but it's still dangerous play. You can't be kicking the ball at head height with your studs out.
Think we need to recognise that this incident is nothing to do with Millwall or their general reputation as a club. This could have been any goalkeeper at any club. That’s not to say that Roberts doesn’t deserve his six match ban. He does. What he did was completely reckless and could have very seriously injured the player. He was completely out of control in the challenge. As for the fans and their sixth minute applause, well that’s just Millwall fans being Millwall fans. Unpleasant and lacking in any class.
Fair enough, but why did it take nearly a week to produce this?
I think a week to make a public statement is quite reasonable. It’s obvious he’s had contact with the player and apologised. I’d expect that statement has been cleared through Millwalls legal team so it’s bound to have taken a few days.
