Charlie Methven Steps Down As CEO

  • Surprised by the timing of this. Would have thought it would be something to happen in the summer.

That said I hadn’t realised Andy Scott had left either so obviously a shake up happening at the board level.

hopefully the owners are still committed otherwise the wheels of our recent progress could soon fall off

  • Maybe it's because he didn't want to stump up 5% (his equivalent shareholding) of this season's losses, so has jumped ship now. If we lose c£10m as expected, that's half a million quid he would need to cough up and I don't think Charlie boy has that sort of cash to flunk off each year...

Methven & Scott leaving in quick succession feels like big news but I'm not sure why.

It'll be interesting to see how how things move forward for the club in the coming months/years.

    Interesting times ahead
  • Odd time of the season to leave so I reckon he's been pushed or has jumped as he knew the push was coming.

It's wishful thinking I know but shouldn't the club be deep into pre-negotiations with players for next season wherever we may be ?  Not having a CEO is likely to be unhelpful.
Why? We don't need a CEO to undertake pre-negotiations, we need an effective DoF for that.
In terms of the non-football operations, I'm sure there are competent people in place to carry out the day to day stuff for the time being - what we need moving forwards is an effective COO and a proven DoF, both reporting to the 'bridge' between the club and the main owners - Gavin Carter is, I'm sure, very capable of undertaking that role as Chair of CAFC, the only issue would be his capacity to take on more of a hands on role alongside his other non-Charlton business interests.

  • Can't help that think some are overthinking this, came in, done a job and onto the next venture. We're in the best position we've been in years behind the scenes and possibly the most stable we've been for a very long time too, onto whatever happens next and hopefully a continuation of this growth.
Why leave now though? He has the chance to have a promotion under his belt as CEO if he at least saw out the season.

I hope it isn’t because of health reasons.
I would prefer to think it is because he wants to devote more time to his first football love.

I'm sure his bank balance is in the rudest of health.
On a serious note he has reported in the past that he had been diagnosed with stage two cancer during the early days of Covid, and I believe he also reported that he had a daughter around that time too.
Oxford United has done well during his time with us, and I think it must be difficult attending our matches whilst carrying the same kind of deep desire we all have wondering how our first football love is getting on and missing out on it.
  • Done well for us. Shame he is going tbh.

Perhaps it has taken time to negotiate the payoffs and buyback the shareholding after getting agreement among the consortium. These private equity/hedge fund types can be brutal - I suspect the decision to clear out the SMT was made around the new year and the choice between a sale/new consortium/new SMT has already been made.

he might have other, (more lucrative) fish to fry! or perhaps he fancies a fresh more exciting challenge, as said in Blazing Saddles

  • I wonder does this mean the chances of a name challenge to The Valley might reduce ?! 🙏
  • New CEO:
It can't be new Canadian Prime minister Mark Carney but could it be the return of our own Peter Varney 🤔

I can understand why the oversold dream theory is a popular explanation, but it doesn't explain the timing, unless that's only just become apparent to the owners, which I find harder to believe as they will have been well aware of the financials before now.
100% I don't think it has anything to do with being pushed... I would say something else is lined up, or maybe there might be something else happening, another interested party in the club!

I have zero knowledge on this.. Just can't see being pushed, when this is the most positive the club has been in years on and off the pitch
Oh ffs mate why did you have to go and say that !!! Not sure we can take another takeover thread lol welcome back Matt !

Came in, took a lot of flak for his history, and seems to have finally helped the club turn a corner.

I think the first season they were all here was an unmitigated disaster, but I also believe that a lot of that was the hangover of previous regimes. This season, whilst we got off to a good start, and had a wobble in between, on the pitch we've become a different beast, and slowly but surely off the pitch there has been investment, positive changes to the matchday experience, and seemingly a whole raft of commercial deals and tie ups to try and generate as much revenue as possible.

If we get promoted this season, even with Charlie stepping down now, I would give him some of the credit for that.
100% and all the medical stuff as well, maybe that was Andy Scott's doing?

That's what i was thinking. He must have been bought out. it's what he does...
Probably got more than I did for mine.

    ??
  • Face value is that it was something he didn’t really want in the first place and he’s had enough of it .  I’m no sure what his legacy is; I do think there’s an element that Jones’ set up is papering over a lot of cracks at the moment.

For me, the clearest indicator he was pushed rather than jumped, is in that statement.

Methven said: "It has been an immense honour to serve this wonderful club. This time last year, when things were not progressing fast enough for all our liking, I agreed to move to south-east London and put my shoulder to the wheel, though it had never been my intention to take an executive role."

If he has jumped, the move to South East London has turned out to be a disaster. Unless he's already signed up to be involved with Millwall or (at a pinch) Gillingham...
It won’t have been a move-move, he’ll have just used the spare bedroom in Southalls flat for a couple of months….
  • Re any replacement...

    ...just saying...🤷‍♂️

I’m sure I seen him outside one of the big houses in Court Road, in Eltham.
