There was a group of about 25 Covid deniers/antivaxers protesting in the central gardens in the town centre yesterday.
Ignoring the insensitivity of choosing yesterday, of all days, to push their crackpot idiology onto the general public, which would include people who had lost loved ones to a disease they claim does not exist, it was striking how many other conspiracy theories these loons were signed up to.
The materials they were giving out, or on display, were all about the evils of the WEF, or the net zero con, or the government tracking you if you don't use cash only, etc. I didn't see any contrails guff in the short time I could be bothered to give their nonsense, but I'm sure it was there or I could have found someone to explain how we're all being sprayed with mind controlling drugs every day.
It was basically conspiracy theory bingo but the shocking thing was that all of them seemed of pensionable age or above. The group most at risk of death during the pandemic. Yet, somehow, in my view through the propaganda and manipulation of bad faith actors and a need to be "different", "better informed" or something, they've become convinced not only of the dangers of vaccines but completely paranoid and signed up to multiple other discredited and dangerous ways of thinking and acting.
Gawd knows where it ends.
These people are so far down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole and can't see their way out. They were out in force on social media yesterday, promoting the idea that we are all being controlled and that those of us who don't subscribe to their crack pot theories are acting as sheep. It's incredibly disrespectful to all those who have lost loved ones to Covid.
I appreciate you have opinions on this and that this thread is a crusade for you. But ‘These people’ are also entitled to their opinions, whether you like it or not. Your whole premise is that what you think has to be fact, so everyone else is wrong. The science now provided clearly shows it was not the ‘Black Plague’ that was touted to threaten civilization. Notwithstanding it could be and in some cases was, unfortunately fatal to those with pre-existing respiratory and other health issues.
Your comparison of the millions sacrificed in the wars to your imaginary Armageddon of health care workers, renders your agenda not only risible but completely incredible.
Prove me wrong.
Of course they are allowed to have their opinions but that doesn't mean they can't have their opinions ridiculed or derided for the deliberate obtuseness they often display which is more irritating than the few who are actually just thick and unable to understand data or science ?
I often disagree with @ME14addick but she hasn't called for their arrest or harm (to the best of my knowledge). I always find it incredibly amusing when twerps with odious idiotic views share the "EnTItlED tO ThEIR OpINIonS" as if somehow they are free of the societal judgment consequences for their actions.

I'd bet that none of those liking Major's post have read any of the links I posted.

They dont need too. They are insulted and feel sick by the comparison.
We have a day to reflect on the loss of loved ones to a virus, and for people to come together to remember, as was witnessed in ceremonies across the country. Most poignantly by the casting of flowers into the Thames
We have another day when people reflect and remember those lost to wars, with ceremonies across the country.
Both days give an opportunity to remember loved ones, nothing sick about that.
When you have an opinion that others disagree with and those others provide evidence as to why the belief is wrong, it doesn't help your case and you cannot be surprised when your opinions are ridiculed.
The conspiracy theorists never provide scientific proof of their ideas.
Your last sentence is not true. I respected the Covid issue and took the necessary steps as advised. One section of our society rarely followed the rules and got away with it but thats another story, as we all know why.
Lots of those who apposed and had offered different views were proved right. Look at that Dr Fauci or what ever is name was has been ridiculed as was the WHO.
Some people think they have the gold star of views and dismiss anyone else as some conspiracy nut jobs.

I know it's an anathema to you to read the Guardian, but read the link I posted this morning which explains the poor treatment of Dr Fauci & the WHO.
The WHO did get some things wrong in the early days, but have corrected them now.

All day long.
Everyone has a right to their opinion; and, thankfully, has the opportunity to express it.
There has been absolute nonsense written on the various COVID threads - and elsewhere - by those enjoying an opportunity to post some utterly ridiculous suggestions, ideas and propaganda. Nothing wrong with that at all. And nothing wrong with them being called out for it.
Where there's an issue, however, is when those who post drivel are called out on it and react by complaining, rather than by presenting coherent, articulate, considered answers.
No-one has full knowledge of every aspect of COVID - or anything else. But those who are incapable of entering intelligent debate about their views shouldn't complain when their views are considered preposterous.
They dont need too. They are insulted and feel sick by the comparison.

I'm loath to become embroiled in your Covid crusade, but that last sentence is unequivocal nonsense.
There proved to be ample scientific proof that Covid was not a Killer Virus, despite the relentless, fear-mongering inculcation of the Government; MSM; NHS; Big Pharma et al.
Those 'Conspiracy Theorists' who were sceptical of a 'vaccine' that bypassed the usual clinical trial protocol demanded of vaccine manufacture among many other concerns, and dry retched at the ludicrous shibboleth, At the Speed of Science, and were right to be sceptical when 'The Science' had no other choice than to shamefacedly admit that the vaccine prevented neither contagion nor transmission, not to mention the fatalities and life-debilitating illnesses suffered by those who believed it their civil duty to be vaccinated.
I could go on, there are numerous other scientifically proven examples where the 'CP's were vindicated in their standpoint, but I appreciate there's little point in doing so.
But back to that last sentence:
Despite the vaccines' proven inefficacy, it was still being championed as having saved millions of lives. There is NO empirical scientific evidence to support this claim, NONE. It is a wholly unquantifiable assertion; scientifically, morally or philosophically.
Unless...
You resort to Modelling: the first and last refuge of the desperate counterfeiter.

You've given not a single iota of proof that the COVID vaccines weren't effective.
Would you care to do so, in order to support your conspiracy theory? Or are you unable to do so, thereby encouraging more ridicule?
There is strong evidence from multiple studies that COVID-19 vaccines saved millions of lives worldwide. Here are some key findings: 1. Global Studies & Estimates A major study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases (2022) estimated that COVID-19 vaccines prevented 19.8 million deaths globally in their first year (December 2020 to December 2021). Another study by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that vaccines reduced mortality by 63% globally in 2021 alone. 2. Country-Specific Data
United States: A study by the Commonwealth Fund (2022) estimated that vaccines prevented 3.2 million deaths and 18.5 million hospitalizations in the U.S.
United Kingdom: The UK Health Security Agency reported that vaccines prevented over 250,000 deaths by early 2022.
India: A study in The Lancet estimated that vaccines prevented over 4 million deaths in India alone.
3. Real-World Effectiveness
Data from countries with high vaccine coverage showed a steep drop in hospitalizations and deaths after vaccine rollouts.
Countries that delayed vaccine access (or had lower uptake) experienced higher excess mortality during COVID-19 waves.
4. Comparisons of Vaccinated vs. Unvaccinated
Studies from CDC, WHO, and Johns Hopkins University consistently showed that unvaccinated individuals had a higher risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 compared to vaccinated individuals.
For example, in the U.S., unvaccinated people were 10–20 times more likely to die from COVID-19 during peak waves.
5. Omicron & Continued Impact
While Omicron was more transmissible, vaccines continued to reduce severe outcomes and deaths, especially when boosted.
A study in The New England Journal of Medicine (2023) showed that even against new variants, vaccines significantly lowered mortality.
Conclusion:
Multiple independent studies, real-world data, and statistical models show that COVID-19 vaccines saved tens of millions of lives worldwide, reduced hospitalizations, and prevented healthcare system collapse during the pandemic.
Safety & efficacy trials: The COVID vaccines underwent the same Phase 1–3 trials as other vaccines, with large participant groups.
Regulatory review: The FDA, EMA, and WHO all conducted independent reviews before granting approval.
Post-market surveillance: After rollout, monitoring systems like VAERS (U.S.) and Yellow Card (UK) tracked rare side effects.
Conclusion The COVID-19 vaccines did not bypass safety protocols, but the process was streamlined due to urgency. Every vaccine still underwent rigorous trials, regulatory review, and long-term monitoring.
The conspiracists' theory that the COVID vaccines "bypassed the usual clinical trial protocol demanded of vaccine manufacture" is as dull-witted and flaccid as many of their other preposterous claims. Save for one thing: even if it were true (which it very obviously isn't) it wouldn't matter.
They dont need too. They are insulted and feel sick by the comparison.
Why on earth is it a sickening comparison? Over seven million people were killed by covid, nearly a quarter of a million from the UK. The former figure, if not the latter, is almost certainly an underestimate. The people who fought this disease and looked after our sick, risked their own health and in some cases gave up their lives in doing so (I believe this is the point, that was being made). They were dedicated and brave and deserve our remembrance. Not sneers and faux-sickness.

Memories are very short, I know a lot of healthcare workers struggle to understand why everyone used to stand on the doorsteps every Thursday, clapping and cheering, but now seem to have forgotten what they went through in the first years of the pandemic.

With you all the way ME14. Dad died of various issues, one of which was covid. I've had it twice and although at the time it felt no worse than a bad cold, I wonder if I am suffering long term effects.

Even if it’s just for the sake of keeping a thread reasonable, it would be nice to keep this thread for reflections as opposed to recreating a right / wrong Covid thread which the same individuals battled back and forth for a number of years. Let’s move on from that please, thank you
Following on from last week's 'Covid Day of reflection', yesterday was designated 'Long Covid Awareness Day' all over the world. The following video put out by respected GP Dr Amir Khan, sheds some light on the myths of Long Covid. The last GP survey found that over 3 million people in the UK said they were suffering from Long Covid to varying degrees, from being mildly affected to being unable to have a normal life.
It's also very clear from the following graph, that the massive increase in people claiming sickness/disability benefit started in 2020 with a much bigger increase from 2022 when mass infection occurred after 'Freedom Day'. This graph shows figures up to the end of March 2024.
Going through my 4th bout of covid, symptoms wise, it's the 2nd worse one, after my initial Delta strain infection, in November 2021. Current bout started with that hideous sore throat and non stop sneezing. Fatigue and weariness off the scale. Non stop hacking and phlegm, a raging furnace of a temperature, sweating like a mutant, ended up being like I was trying to sleep in a swimming pool. Plus the ocular migraines and sensitivity to light and screens, that non stop medium level nagging tension headache. Plus insomnia, like it's built in, 2 hours sleep in the last 48 plus hours. Whereas, with the delta strain, I slept like 12 hours a day or more.
With the AZ vaccine I Yellow carded: fecal impaction, I didn't/ couldn't have a shit for 10 days, and deafness, I suffered noticeable hearing loss in my left ear, within 24 hours of the first AZ jab. I now wear hearing aids, have a loss of -75 decibels in both ears, but did qualify for a free concessionary disabled bus pass.
I think without having had the AZ vaccine, Delta would have killed me, I had a fever of 105 f, across a few days, but refused to go to hospital and told my wife If i die, I die in my own bed , not a hospital bed, I lost 12 IB in weight in 3 days.
