George Foreman RIP

Boxing heavyweight legend George Foreman has died aged 76, according to his family. 

Known as Big George in the ring, he competed for decades starting in the 1960s, winning gold at the Olympics and numerous title belts, including the world heavyweight title twice. 

He lost his first title to Muhammad Ali in their famous Rumble in the Jungle fight in 1974. But Foreman's professional boxing career boasted an astonishing 76 total wins and 68 knock outs, almost double that of Ali. Foreman lost five bouts over his career.

He won his first world heavyweight championship in 1973 then did it again in 1994 aged 45. He retired from the sport in 1997 before finding fame and fortune again as a pitchman for a best-selling grill named after him.

    Up there with Ali as the greatest heavyweight ever.
    World champion 20 years apart as a heavyweight. Can’t see that achievement ever happening again.

    RIP Big George. A true boxing icon.

    George Foreman was a boxing Legend but to non boxing fans he was just as famous when he fronted the George Foreman grill; which was one of his best ever pay days.
    George had five sons called George and was married 5 times ! Not so well known is he also had 7 daughters and only one was called Georgetta.

    The Ali, Frazier and Foreman fights were some of the most exciting, brutal and famous fights in the history of Boxing.
    The Preacher man had a rich tapestry of a life and has left his mark.

    Coincidentally i was just watching the brilliant David Frost interviews with Mohammad Ali on BBC iPlayer last night which featured George Foreman and The Rumble in The Jungle .

    RIP....Not to bothered about boxing these days though I was keen back in the 70's and 80's....Foreman, Ali and Frazier....and maybe add Ken Norton to those 3....were part of growing up in the 70's.

    Just incredible how Larry Holmes gets up from this sledgehammer from Ernie Shavers. Heavyweight boxers from that era were tough men on another level compared to today’s heavyweight scene.
