I've had enough so I am packing it in

It's been a big part of my life for a long time, a vital part in many ways.

There have been good times and not so good times.

Met some great people and encountered a few crooks and idiots.

To everything there is a season, a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

But now is the time to pack it in.

I've done it for long enough and it is time to move on to the next chapter before I get too old.

So yes, at the end of this month that will be it for me.

I'm closing my small business, taking my small pension and retiring from work.

But that will give me more time to do the things I really enjoy like travelling, visiting museums and art galleries, tracing my family tree, reading, listening to music, following Charlton (I might even do some more aways), helping run the Charlton Athletic Museum and Bromley Addicks.

And of course posting on Charlton Life.

    I want to visit Tyrone as part of the family research as my Ancestry DNA test says that my 27% Irishness comes from there so be careful, I might just take you up on that offer!

    Best wishes for a long, happy and healthy retirement Henry.

    I've had a pretty rubbish couple of years health wise and work wise it's far, far worse. So this is something that's very much at the forefront of my mind too. After 40 years in the workplace I've definitely got my eye on winding down over the next few years.

    Ben, as you may know I retired 15 months ago and I don't regret it for a nanosecond. Life is good.

    May I wish you well for a long, peaceful, happy and fulfilling next chapter.

    P.S. I'll be popping in to the museum on Friday - hopefully see you then.

    Thanks, being self-employed means I've been able to wind down, at least in the number of jobs I take on, over the past few years but I've always been thinking about the work tasks I have to do.

    It's a nice feeling not having to do that anymore.

    Good on you, I know personally that it’s a huge step / decision which I took 2 years ago. I can only speak for myself but it’s the best thing I done in many years. 

    Have I regretted it, probably for a very short while, but what I haven’t missed is the agro of running my old company, no more having to hold back from telling my employees / customers what I actually thought of them, no worrying how we were going to pay the wages every month. Think what I’m saying when I made the decision then a great weight was removed from my shoulders, we had more time to enjoy our time together go exploring, plan gloriously fabulous holiday, see Britain and the world. Our only worry after 47 years of marriage could we be together for long periods, amazingly we could and we are still having more fun than any other time in our lives. 

    Wish you all the best and wish you all the health so you can enjoy your retirement to the upmost.

    Good luck @Henry Irving.  I was an HR/Business Change Project Consultant and had been freelance from 2001 - 2020 when I closed my limited company.  Did a couple of FTC jobs after that - but called it a day in September 2024.  Have some boring days but on the whole enjoy the freedom to, largely, do what I want when I want and opportunity for travelling.  Enjoy.

    All the best Henry. The key thing there is that you have lots of interests to keep you going. I've only ever met a tiny handful of people who regretted retiring and those were all people who had nothing much in life besides work. For you, I can almost guarantee that you're gonna love it.

    I’ve been retired about 4 years now and agree with others that I’ve not missed for a nanosecond. Travelling has always been my passion and I seem to spend 6 months of the year out of the uk. 

    You have made the right decision to retire and now your time will be on your terms.

    I retired yesterday. Did 2 extra years. 
    Looking at it as new chapter. Not as an end.
    Had a job since I was 10 years old.
    Think I will get a tee shirt with the legend
    ” I have done my bit “!

    Interesting, we'll have to get you to an inter-county game at Healy Park in Omagh, to say nothing of swinging by the O'Neill's factory shop in Strabane for some GAA gear.

    Is there any particular area of Tyrone that is indicated from your research? 

    Not that I have any particular Tyrone bias or anything...
