MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Huddersfield Town | Saturday 29th March 2025 - 12:30pm KO

Charlton Athletic vs Huddersfield Town
Saturday 29th March 2025 - 12:30pm Kick-Off (Live on SkySports+)
Referee: Declan Bourne

Introduction
Charlton head back to the Valley this coming Saturday in search of re-igniting their identity after a disappointed yet some what typical result at London Road, a 3-0 defeat at Peterborough means we'll have to wait a while longer to win in that part of Cambridgeshire, with our hopes of finishing second taking a slight hit... We welcome Huddersfield Town to SE7 this weekend, looking to stamp our supremacy on the visitors... many more defeats at this stage really could be an ultimatum to our hopes of automatic promotion.

The Opposition
Name: Huddersfield Town (6th) - Caretaker Manager: Jon Worthington
Ground: John Smith's Stadium
Previous League Result: Huddersfield 5-1 Crawley

Joining Huddersfield in their trip to South East London are the Sky cameras, with the Addicks once again playing in an early kick-off meaning we have the opportunity to put pressure on those above us come 3pm - This will be the sixth time this campaign we've played at 12:30, with the Addicks winning all encounters at the Valley, and drawing twice on the road.

However Huddersfield will naturally be a different proposition... Their campaign in the eyes of their fans will be a disappointed, which culminated with Manager: Michael Duff being relieved of his duties a couple of weeks ago - Their hopes of an instant return to the Championship, looked very unlikely a few weeks ago, however a 5-1 win over Crawley two weeks ago, means that there may well be life left in this side, with Caretaker: Jon Worthington taking charge of this side for a second time.

Their poor run of form of late certainly hasn't been great at the John Smith Stadium, prior to their 5-1 win over Crawley they hadn't scored a goal at home in 2025, so they broke that duck in style!! - Away from home though and their problems havent been an issue, with the Terriers losing just twice on the road this calendar year, with nine wins in total... As strike pairings go, and our opponents this Saturday really shouldn't be where they are; Dion Charles signed from Bolton has yet to score for his new side (ominous given his record against the Addicks), whilst Joe Taylor (signed from Luton) took just three minutes to score upon his return from injury last time out.

It could well be another busy afternoon for our Defence

Charlton Team News
Injuries seem to be rearing their ugly heads as we approach the most crucial time of the season, with Miles Leaburn, Daniel Kanu and Josh Edwards all unavailable for the trip to Peterborough last Saturday - Our two youngsters up front will remain absent against Huddersfield this Saturday, whilst there is the possible inclusion for Josh Edwards, who had some involvement in training this week.

It means that we could well see a starting line up, that will be similar to the one that faced Peterborough United, and whilst some may bemoan that fact, its equally worth remembering that we could have been 2-0 up ourselves on a better day - Its just further proof that fine margins will decide the outcome of these last eight games, and is why the first goal will once again be extremely important come Saturday afternoon. Its also important to remember... If anything can happen to us, it can happen to others too.

Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Watson - Coventry - Docherty - Small
Anderson
Campbell - Godden

Substitutes Bench: Bouzanis - Mitchell - McIntyre - Berry - Gilbert - Ahadme - Aneke

    • Charlton Athletic have lost each of their last two home league games against Huddersfield Town, as many as across their prior 12 matches at the Valley combined (W7 D3).
    • Huddersfield Town have won each of their last five league games against Charlton Athletic, scoring 2.8 goals on average per match during that time.
    • After losing their last league game 3-0 against Peterborough, Charlton will be looking to avoid losing successive matches for the first time since November 2024, with one of those defeats coming against the Terriers.
    • Huddersfield have lost four of their last six league games (W2), including two of their last three on the road (W1).

  • A few years some numpty made up a word to describe how his team responded to adversity: "bouncebackability" ... I wonder whatever happened to him when he left that tinpot club ...

Anyway, on Saturday we'll need to display our ability to bounce back from a shocking defeat. We've done it before and we'll do it again - we'll need to if we're serious about a play-off spot (with an outside hint of automatic promotion).

Addicks to win 2-0 and then move onto a bit of Stag-hunting in midweek.
  • 1-0 if Edwards plays, 1-1 otherwise
  • Their ground is called John Smith's and their gaffer is called Worthington. If they've got a player called Boddington then they've ticked off all the crap '90s beer I used to drink. Let's hope it's the Terriers who are bitter come 14:30 on Saturday.
They haven't got anyone called "Red Barrel" as well have they...🙄
  • The Terriers will be sent packing back up the M1, with us snapping at their heels...🙄
  • Think we might struggle. 0-1 Hudds.
  • Don't break my heart Charlton...

    Again!

    2-1

Have to find a way to pair Ramsey and Small on the right and TC on the left. We look toothless without the threat of Small. The Peterb game showed just how important he’s been attacking the oppo left back. It puts the whole team on the back foot and us on the front.
    Hopefully Edwards is fit.
  • We're now the hunted and hope we can handle this. Peterborough have served us a timely wake up call - perhaps for overconfidence if not handling pressure. Squad is stretched more. Would take a draw on Saturday, but in expectation of taking 8+ points from the next four. Despite my caution I'm really looking forward to this game! PSA test beforehand, like 499 others.
  •   If Edwards can’t start I would play the following so we still have Small and Campbell as an attacking force.

                         Mannion
    Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey - McIntyre
         Anderson - Coventry - Docherty -
               Small - Godden - Campbell

  • Draw at best for us and squeaky bum time as the play off certs, we were before P’boro,  are now looking over their shoulders .
Nervous times but nothing a victory or 8 maybe 11 on the spin won’t sort out!
  • I think it'll be a draw...12.30 kick offs normally start slowly, so we may well be chasing the game second half.  Gas-man to the rescue? COYA!
  • 2-1 to the Addicks. Have to be better than last week.
  • That 0-3 reverse at Peterborough will have probably dented our confidence and belief a little.
We could and should have made more of our openings  with our perenniel lack of composure and technique affecting our shooting boots again.
More worrying was our susceptibility to the fast direct counter, exposing  our normally solid defence.
This one is going to be all about character.
We need to guts out a win.
  • I'd play Watson as a LWB in this game, freeing up Small to go back on the right. He's played there before, notably scoring for MK Dons in the game where Scott Fraser ran the show.

I'm hoping last weekend was a blip and not a sign of us running out of steam at the wrong time.

  • In my opinion One of the three more important matches against a direct rival until the end of the regular season. We must win, no more mistakes.

  • A chance to tag on to the top bunch- or join the scrap below.
    Draw.
  • This will be my first game for almost 14 months after I managed to swap my season ticket seats for seats which require no steps, and I can use the disabled gate for the West Lower, wherever that's located.. if anyone knows then please let me know. Hopefully I'll be able to get a cheap Uber from Staines. I looked the other week and it was £37, then I looked the other day and it was £80!

After Leyton Orient's win last night Udders will see this as a must win. Surprisingly both LO & Huddersfield have lost 4 of their last six games (winning 2) but are still in the playoff mix.   2 -1 to Red & White army.
  • All I say is that we must give Gilbert more gametime. He looks class to me. Is it infeasible that he could play out wide or behind Godden? Shuffling him into the team would certainly be my solution to not only a missing Edwards, but also alternatively our lack of fit strikers. This is what I hope they’ve been testing out in training all week.

In this system he has to play the Berry role really. He could possibly play the TC role but relies on taking TC out. Small is still playing as WB and Gilbert isn’t defensively strong enough for that
  • All the remaining games are important, but a win in this one will go a long way to put us almost out of sight of one of our chasers. We really can't afford to lose otherwise we will be looking nervously over our shoulder.

Josh Edwards absence has shown how important he is to the team, so I am really hoping he is fit to play - that would be a huge boost. With Josh back I can see us scraping the much needed win. Without him in the starting 11, I will take a draw.
  • Draw ….. but players like small and TC have to start creating the chances and not keep wasting so many opportunities.. for us to stand any chance of staying in the play off places
