Why do we sing the chorus from "Ghost Riders in the Sky"?

My buddy has just played the Outlaws version of it on Radio 1 Prague, so we are curious.

Anyone know how/why we started, and is it a-rare-Charlton original?

It goes way back, doesn't it. 1970s?

The original song's about a group of people cursed to wander, homeless, forever. Which may explain why it was very popular in the 80s and was sung less frequently after we returned to the Valley. In the 90s I remember it as something I only ever heard us sing at away games, although of course that might be my memory playing tricks on me.

First heard it in the Div 1 season 1986-7. Got a good outing at Old Trafford as I remember. It was stripped down to just the chorus of Yippee I ay, Yippe I o by then, I don't remember if we did an extended version in previous years.

  • Was it not when they played the song over the tannoy at Nottingham Forest anway and Charlton fans started repeating the ‘yippie-i-a, yippy-a-o’ but ?

The big question is, why does Johnny Cash sing it wrong? His version is Yippee Aye Oh, Yippee Aye Ay. Ours is as the original by Stan Jones.

Agree - first sung at Forest away on a wet Tuesday night when we lost 4-0. Our first away game following promotion and we won the following 1-0 away to Man U. Think this was one of Selwyns favourites

So we are talking 86-87, promotion to Div 1 while at Selhurst?

The first season in Div 1, second game of the season at Forest away, 27th August 1986, 4-0 defeat then that miracle at Old Trafford followed

This is why I said 80s although @blackpool72 and @stonemuse both say 70s.

Then again, Blackpool is so old now he's probably going dolayley

    I don't remember it in the 70's.
I'd say 1986 the first year back in Division 1 the same as with Valley Floyd Road.
