MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Northampton Town | Good Friday - 3pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Northampton Town
Good Friday - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Ollie Yates

Introduction
The games seem to keep coming, and the Addicks continue to deal with whatever gets thrown at us... At least I hope that wont come back to haunt me, whilst ignoring the fact that the last time we were hosts at the Valley, we were pegged back to a 2-2 draw with Lincoln City - We're into the time of the season, where failure to win could spell curtains on our attempts to win automatic promotion from this Division - On a plus point, we may not even need to win to confirm our spot in the season ending Play-Offs... You can bet that Nathan Jones and the squad remain very much focused on the best possible outcome though.

The Opposition
Name: Northampton Town (19th) - Manager: Kevin Nolan
Ground: Sixfields Stadium
Previous League Result: Northampton 0-0 Reading

Before we look to back to back games against promotion rivals, there is the issue of Northampton Town to initially deal with.

If there was one game which changed our season around, then I think most fans would point to this reverse fixture at the Sixfields back in December. Lets be honest, no one could have predicted the first half showing that day, and you'd have been carted off to the madhouse for even suggesting it pre-match... However it was a match where Charlton really ignited their season, with the 5-0 win almost flattering our opponents as we took complete control of proceedings that afternoon.

Since then, we all know how Charlton have coped, but how have Northampton recovered from such a defeat against a team that at the time were low on confidence, and low on goals - Well given their performance, you'd have thought that Northampton would be shoe-ins for relegation, however with the help of a Charlton loanee (Terry Taylor, who wont be available tomorrow afternoon), and a managerial change (with ex-Bolton Midfielder: Kevin Nolan stepping into the hot seat), things have improved... Well they're still just five points ahead of the drop zone, yet with just two defeats since the end of February, and this is a side that probably look set to enjoy another campaign in League One next season...

Given their last two results, a 0-0 draw hosting Reading, and a 4-0 win at "rivals" Peterborough, this could easily end up being a potential banana skin of a fixture if we're not careful.

Charlton Team News
The Addicks breathed a sigh of relief last time out with Tyreece Campbell returning to the line-up, and ultimately scoring the winning goal in Cambridgeshire last Saturday - However the in-form winger / striker (Call he whatever you want) suffered a dead leg, so may well be a minor doubt from the start tomorrow, especially with bigger fixtures still to come over the course of the next week... Lloyd Jones has now missed the last three games, its possible he'll be absent again with Nathan Jones looking at Wycombe as the game to bring him back into.

Elsewhere and I cant see too many changes, although there was the surprise inclusion of Michael Mbick against Cambridge last weekend, with the young Striker chosen from the bench ahead of Gassan Ahadme, so could well be a repeat selection we see once more. Whilst I'm sure Danny Hylton would love to repeat his scoring antics against his previous club once more, it would be surprising to see him involved given our lack of injuries at present.

Mannion
Ramsay - McIntyre - Gillesphey
Small - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Berry
Godden - Campbell

Substitutes Bench: Bouzanis - Watson - Anderson - Gilbert - Hylton - Aneke - Mbick

On Good Friday (two points of the playoffs) Hylton comes up against Northampton again
  • Expecting them to park the bus and play for a draw, as this gets them closest to being mathematically safe. Still leaning into thinking Bristol Rovers should be the 4th one to go down, but a string of losses could make it tricky for the Cobblers, so will likely play it very cautious.

An early goal in front of hopefully a good crowd with nice weather would settle any nerves. TC playing would be key to that. We may need to be patient if they go full anti-football and all defend, but they'll tire if they do and we should punish that.

Would like to see Mbick get some more minutes if we are a couple ahead. Also think we should give Gilbert some minutes, even only to keep him fresh - set pieces could be key in tight upcoming games.
  • Must win game

*Given we are 4th team behind 3 other teams I would take it as a given it would be curtains to any Automatic Promotion hope if we don't win. (remember we need all of Wrexham,Wycombe and Stockport to match the result/get a worse result)

  • bit gutted to be missing this one as away for the weekend from tomorrow - know a few other ST holders who are also away, so nice that there's still a decent crowd expected.

routine 3-0 win and the march continues....
  • Northampton won’t just sit in, they will press hard from the off but that should leave gaps for TC, Small and hopefully Berry too. They aren’t the mugs we played in December but Taylor and Guinness-Walker will be big misses in key positions
  • Comfortable 5-0 to match the away game, and on we go towards the playoffs at the very least, but 2nd is still possible...🤷‍♂️

Be a great result for our Goal Difference as well, if Wrexham lose two games 1-0 (with one being against us), we'd potentially go into the final day, level on points and Goal Difference with them - As at the moment they're +7 ahead
  • They will miss TT. Also Eaves missing. A nice comfortable win would be nice but we don't tend to do that. Don't want to go behind in this one that's for sure. 2-0. Godden and prolific Gillesphey. UTA

  • This is the must-win game of our run-in. Let's secure our play-off place and then see what happens. If Lloyd Jones is fit enough to play, I would play him, the same with TC.

They need the win just as much (as they are not mathematically safe from relegation).

This should as you say though leave gaps for TC, Small, Berry and also remember Godden is quite good at taking his chance.
  • Has there been any indication of how many tickets have actually been sold for this game ?

and anti e managed to find how many there were for the game in Easter 2009 ?

The club have already sold more tickets in the home end for the visit of Northampton Town on Good Friday than any other fixture in 2025, and on Wednesday morning home ticket sales for Friday’s game passed the total sold for the March 29th visit of Huddersfield Town, 15,689, the previous highest attendance in 2025.

    • Charlton Athletic have lost just two of their 17 home league games against Northampton Town (W6 D9), though one of those came in a 3-2 defeat in this fixture last season at the Valley.
    • Northampton Town have lost just two of their last 16 league games against sides from London (W8 D6), scoring 2+ goals in eight of those matches.
    • Charlton have won just two of their last 13 league games played on Good Friday (D6 L5), failing to win any of their four home matches in that time.
    • Northampton have won just one of their last six away league games played on Good Friday (D2 L3), a 2-0 victory vs Oldham Athletic in April 2022.

The attendance v Birmingham at what I think was Easter was 20,022

  • Despite Northampton's good results recently their squad is depleted with injuries and are without Taylor.
I can't see anything other than a comfortable win.

    4-0  ( Godden , TC , Doc & Berry )
  • We have sold out our initial 1,200 tickets for this fixture.

A further allocation of 800 tickets will be available on arrival at Charlton Athletic on matchday from the South Stand ticket office, card only

    Good turn out by them
  • Our preview. They've only lost one of their last nine away games

So, more than 15,689 and less than 20,022
