  • If he stays he's a great prospect buying into the project, sensible young man putting his career before money.

If he leaves he is an ungrateful, greedy, over rated snake who will crash and burn.

    There is no middle ground
    : -)
All jokes aside, whatever he does or doesn’t do is his decision to make and either thrive upon or regret as it pans out but I think playing under Nathan and with the guys he’s got around him has been pretty good for him so far so another season, if we are in the Championship, or half season if we are in League one still (because we won’t hold on to him for much more than that) will give him that more time I think he still needs before he really is ready to step up.
  • Unfortunately I think Small will be off. The draw of a juicy signing on fee in lieu of a transfer fee + potentially playing for a club in the top half of the championship will prove too much.

Would love for him to stay but also think he can be replaced. The last few seasons with Rak-sakyi, CBT and now TC, we seem to have been able to replace the wingers we couldn't keep hold of.
  • I remember people saying T Campbell wasn't good enough, wasn't scoring or providing assists.

Some thought he shouldn't have been given a new contract in the summer

He always had the talent but he was young, in a new position and the team was struggling.

Now he'll walk young player of the year and some are even saying he should win Player of the Year.

Young players can improve, with time, patience, support and guidance of their manager, coaches and team mates.

    Small can do the same.
He needs to play regularly - if he joins the wrong club and doesn't play regularly he'll go backwards. Plenty of young players move for money to the wrong clubs.

I rate him and he has a very high ceiling but he is still very raw and gets away with some pretty poor distribution and passing because it's league 1.
If he goes elsewhere to a Championship team it will either rgo excellently or he will be bombed out within a few games I suspect
Should stay a couple of years and work on his foot all where he is first choice.

Good left backs are hard to find - he will play regularly somewhere .
He's not even playing Left-Back though, he's been doing better at Right-Back

Could make the argument that Edwards is the better Left-Back.
He would play left back in another team .

Is he good enough defensively to play LB or even LWB in a decent Championship team at the moment?

His current role exploits his flair and he has the protection of the incredibly solid Ramsay behind him.
  • Would be concerned by Small as a Championship left back. Think sides would exploit how much he likes to get forward. Ultimately I think his future is as more of a winger where he has someone that can protect behind him.
  • I think the fact we bought Edwards shows that NJ was concerned about Small being a LWB at L1 level let alone Championship level. I really like Small and I hope he stays but I also back NJ to find the right replacement if needed

A lot of teams play a similar kind of hybrid system to us. It’s not that unlikely that he can find a similar role somewhere where he’s a wing back that essentially has a back 4 to cover him

Does it? We were never going to have a squad with only one left back.
I think it does, Edwards started the first two games and came straight back in after his injury. Jones clearly fancied him more than Small
  • Probably not a trust or attitude thing with Small v Edwards.
Edwards is 4 years older and 150-200 more senior appearances than Small
  • “Keep him, would make a good squad player”

The irony this year is we actually have players we should and need to keep hold of.  Hopefully we can get something sorted.  Him, Ramsay, TC, Coventry, Edwards and Lloyd Jones really are the core players we’ve come to rely on.

Godden too, but he’s got a few more years on the above mentioned names.

  • If he stays I’ll eat my hat.
Have you a supply of liquorice hats?
  • If he stays I’ll eat my hat.
    Ever the optimist 🙄
  • I would expect him to stay if we go up unless he gets a silly offer. Not sure that will happen. If we don't go up, he will have championship offers so you would think it is a no brainer for him if that is the case.
  • I like Small, but he is very hit and miss. Said to my dad at the weekend that he's no CBT who has struggled one div up, and he's certainly not at Tyreece levels. He has ability, but he's far from the finished article. I know everyone keeps saying he's a wing back, but he's played right wing pretty much since the "light bulb " moment of Northampton away. He's not actually very good at defending imho but has a lot of energy to get up and down the wing and is better going forward. Definitely a rough diamond who'd be better off getting a couple of seasons of proper football  under his belt. Still a young man with a "high ceiling " as they say!

That’s because he plays at RWB when we don’t have the ball, and becomes a right winger when we get the ball.

But what would be a silly offer.  He has a good few games under his belt and he would not carry a transfer fee, so he could pick up a package that a "bought" player could not.

We would be due some sort of development fee so not totally free.

In what way are we due a development fee, he wasn't an academy product?

It’s purely down to age not what academy a player came through. Really easy to forget he’s only 20! We wouldn’t get a fee comparable to his transfer value though in part because of his short time with us I think

    Charlton Life transfer policy:

On Terrel Thomas: "He only costs us a goal every 3rd or 4th game, plenty good enough for squad player. Verdict: Keep him!"

On Thierry Small: "Yes he can cover an entire flank singled handed, remains a threat even when doubled up on, and has loads of time and potential to get better, but sometimes he over hits his crosses. Verdict: Easily replaced - get rid!"
Unsure if this is a fair summary of the "Charlton Life transfer policy". You're stating two different opinions about two different players.

Is the point that people on an internet forum having different opinions about different players makes the entire forum and every view within it somehow hypocritical?

I think you now get a development fee for any period of time.a player plays for you when they are U24 or something.

I looked it up at its 0.25% of the fee a year if the mive is between associations and as determined between clubs if within the UK ir by tribunal if they cant agree but takes into account length of time registered at former club
  • I think you now get a development fee for any period of time.a player plays for you when they are U21 or sonething. So only a small percentage of the total years development.
Ok, so something which probably equates to naff all in real terms...🙄
  • Yeah i edited my post after looking it up because i couldnt remember the details
