MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Northampton Town : Good Friday 18th April 2025 KO 15:00
Welcome to the penultimate home game of the season, not withstanding the playoff Semi (if required), and today we welcome to the hallowed turf of The Valley Northampton Town, and this is the game where we can cement that playoff spot with another win and three more points added to the quota.
Back in December we recorded our best away result of the season with a 0-5 victory up at Sixfields, and a repeat score line today would be nice, but Northampton are still not safe from dropping into the relegation zone so nothing can be taken for granted, The Cobblers currently sit 19th in the table, five points above the drop zone, they will look to continue momentum built in their previous two fixtures - a 4-0 win at Peterborough United and a goalless draw at home to Reading, however they have some absentees today with Nesta Guinness-Walker, who is suspended following two bookable offences last time out, and one Terry Taylor, who has proved himself well on loan, who will be sitting in the stands.
Asked about the fitness of Lloyd Jones, Nathan Jones said: "Lloyd’s recovered really, really well, so we’re hoping to have him back over the weekend for the game.", so good news there, Miles Leaburn remains sidelined.
We've met on 38 previous occasions winning 14, the Cobblers 10 and the remaining 14 meetings resulting in draws, we ran out 5-0 victors in the reverse fixture in December 2025, with skipper Greg Docherty scoring twice and Campbell, Leaburn and Danny Hylton also on target.
Here we go
Team news...
Lloyd Jones returns to the starting line-up and there is a place on the bench for Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
Jones has missed the last three games with a minor calf injury and replaces Macaulay GIllesphey, who is absent due to muscle stiffness. Maynard-Brewer hasn’t been in a Charlton squad since suffering an injury against Birmingham City in February.
Kayne Ramsay, Jones and Tom McIntyre will make up a back three in front of Will Mannion.
Thierry Small and Josh Edwards will operate as wing-backs with Conor Coventry, Luke Berry and skipper Greg Docherty playing in a midfield three.
Tyreece Campbell, who has scored four goals in his last three appearances, will once again start up front alongside Matty Godden.
Maynard-Brewer is joined on the bench by Tennai Watson, Karoy Anderson, Alex Gilbert, Gassan Ahadme, Chuks Aneke and Micah Mbick.
Charlton: Mannion; Ramsay, Jones, McIntyre; Small, Coventry, Berry, Docherty (c), Edwards; Godden, Campbell
Subs: Maynard-Brewer, Watson, Anderson, Gilbert, Ahadme, Aneke, Mbick

Lots of "Shoe army" at London Bridge.
(As in chants of, not necessarily a load of supporters).0 -
COYR be at it from the off get the game won by halftime and rest some players1

Jones returns but replaces Gillesphey who drops out the squad entirely. Club say it’s “Muscle stiffness” for Macca.6

Surely Macca isn’t injured now?0

AMB also back, and Mbick keeps his place on the bench. Hopefully we’ll be in the position where Mbick can get a decent run out.

Surprised to see Lloyd in there. Felt like he would be close to a return but expected him to be back for Wycombe and Wrexham.
Fri -> Mon feels like a big ask. Hopefully he comes through today without any trouble.4 -
Plenty of battering on the bench if we need to batter them.2

Sounds like a well deserved rest for Gilly.5

Think he needs one game to get some rhythm before WycombeCallumcafc said:Surprised to see Lloyd in there. Felt like he would be close to a return but expected him to be back for Wycombe and Wrexham.

I'm imagining the scene akin to The Life of Brian with all these supporters holding 1 shoe aloft whilst chanting.cfgs said:Lots of "Shoe army" at London Bridge.

Without sounding too cocky, maybe Jones hopes that we should be relatively comfortable and that Jones can get a good 60-70 mins ahead of Wycombe?Callumcafc said:Surprised to see Lloyd in there. Felt like he would be close to a return but expected him to be back for Wycombe and Wrexham.

Surprised Mitchell didn't make the bench, particularly with Jones returning from injury. Ideally you would think with an eye on Monday's game, Jones would come off after 60 mins but there is no replacement for him on the bench unless we undergo a formation change, which NJ is often reluctant to do. I don't understand why we need three strikers on the bench? What does Ahadme offer? He is never brought on, behind both Aneke and Mbick in the pecking order, having a CB option would provide us with some insurance for an injury to one of the three CBs.7

Can understand putting Jones in with Macca out. Ideal scenario is we're 3 up after an hour and can take him off.1

Mitchell would be on the bench surely if that was the plancafc_se7 said:

I think Jones imagines he can shuffle players about to cover if needed more easily at home.0

This Jones and Macca on/off injury stuff is getting a bit concerning with the playoffs coming up...2

Watson can play left or right and MacIntyre can cover for Jones againSouthbank said:

I’m guessing they are just resting Macca . He’s played nearly every game . Not a bad thing but I’d definitely have Mitchell on the bench .eastterrace6168 said:This Jones and Macca on/off injury stuff is getting a bit concerning with the playoffs coming up...7 -
Mitchell may be injured0

Mitchell seems completely out of favour! It's a pity as I thought he was a good defender earlier in the season.1
