If clean sheets win you titles, why aren't Burnley top?

And just as Golfie waa premature with his question so are posters with their responses today.Callumcafc said:Deary me.
Burnley now top with six games left and no team has games in hand on them.
They have the fewest goals conceded and 7th most goals scored.2 -
But regardless of whether Burnley actually finish top or not, the best three defensive records in that league are 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the table. The three best attacking records are 3rd, 5th and 11th.Henry Irving said:

If they go up, it will be really interesting if the really solid Parker team does better than the very attacking and "progressive" Kompany team0
-
Probably better because if you keep games tight you always have a chance.killerandflash said:If they go up, it will be really interesting if the really solid Parker team does better than the very attacking and "progressive" Kompany team
Though Parker also won’t be Bayern’s next manager.1 -
I think that if Burnley go up they will stay solid and surprise people. It will indeed be interesting to see. Parker is really an astute manager and any dislike I had for him is gone. Frankly I wonder if he could be a future England manager candidate.killerandflash said:If they go up, it will be really interesting if the really solid Parker team does better than the very attacking and "progressive" Kompany team1 -
If he does become England manager one day watch out for him throwing his toys out the pram when the Brazil / Germany / Spain job comes up & he's not given permission to talk to then about it....😂.jimmymelrose said:

If Burnley go up... They will come straight back down. Just like Sheff Utd. The PL is becoming a boring locked shop. The only good thing about it is that it makes betting on PL relegation very simple.0

Promoted today with 2 games to spare and can still win the league.2

Good, I've a lot of time for them after a certain incident.2

My initial point still stands.
Burnley have an amazing defensive record and in so have kept 30 clean sheets. But they are still not top. Leeds are top by way of goal difference. So even by only conceding 15 goals all season Burnley might still not be Champions. Leeds have let on almost double the amount that Burnley have.....but have scored far more goals than they have conceded.
Ergo. Clean sheets by themselves do not win you titles.13 -
Leeds have the second best defensive record in that league by the way… they’ve conceded fewer goals than Birmingham have in League One, for context.
Two teams with the best defensive records go up autos. Two teams with the best attacking records are 1st and… 14th5 -

Norwich, second highest scorers in the division are 14th, so scoring goals clearly doesn't matter that much if you keep conceding them at the other end.golfaddick said:Just that really.
I've banged on about it long enough & now there's your proof. 24 clean sheets this season & just done 12 games in a row without conceding.
But they aren't top & imo wont get automatic promotion.
So, can we agree that scoring goals does actually matter. (6 of their last 12 games have been 0-0 draws).
Spurs have scored the same number is Arsenal.
Swindon are the top scorers in League 2, and are 13th.7 -
Last time Swindon did that, we appointed their manager!!!!MrLargo said:

Certainly unexpected. They've scored in 4 of their last 6 games, but only kept one clean sheet in that time. If only they'd managed to keep more clean sheets.....golfaddick said:

Turns out that golfie was right.
Scoring goals wins you titles.11 -
Yeah......nuff said.
I take all the brick bats that are thrown at me but I was right. Clean sheets dont win you titles.
Clean sheets & scoring goals do.5 -

We scored the same amount of goals as Wrexham mate.golfaddick said:Yeah......nuff said.

Clean sheets & scoring goals do.Stockport, Wycombe and Orient all scored more than them.
Yet Wrexham finished second.
Indeed 1 to 6 went in GA order as well as obviously points order.2 -
Notice you've finally changed your tune so rather focusing on one aspect... You're now talking about both, which is what everyone has been telling you all alonggolfaddick said:Yeah......nuff said.

Any chance someone can add the question mark onto the thread title? Annoys me more and more every time I have to look at it.1

Was that really what you were saying all along? Really?golfaddick said:Yeah......nuff said.

Well its obvious you have to do both, but I started the thread when Burnley had just kept 12 clean sheets in a row..........but I think a few of those games ended 0-0. Imagine if a few of those 0-0's ended 2-1. They wouldn't have set a record but they would have won the title.se9addick said:

The answer to the original question is simple! It’s because Leeds scored a 91st minute winner today0

Congratulations to Burnley on their automatic promotion.
I think most of us could see it happening.4 -
You don’t have to score the most goals or concede the fewest to win the league. It’s a daft thing to be obsessed about. But you cannot lose if you don’t concedegolfaddick said:My initial point still stands.
