Most important thing is to research what restaurants you want to go to. Rome has some of the best restaurants in the world but these are outnumbered by the pure mass of bad restaurants - don’t expect just to pick one while walking around you will be disappointed. If you plan, you will be very happy with the food. Don’t go to the big sites during the day, it will be hot, crowded and it will be hard to appreciate the history. Instead get up really early and enjoy a sunrise stroll around the historical sites before the crowds wake up. The evening passegiata while eating a gelato, while cliche, is still a must do
In Italy they have smaller restaurants called Osterias. These generally have a more limited menu but great food. In fact, when you see a menu with too many options, it can be a warning sign.
Good point Muttley, many of the best and most authentic places i have eaten in Italy (similar but differently named in Spain and France) fit this description. Limited menu on chalkboard, not huge menu all warmed up by microwave.
Doing our European driving tour (7 weeks) in a few weeks. We already know quite a few gems which we look forward to revisiting. And we are looking forward to finding a few more.

I have just booked a 10 day around Italy in November. Looking forward to revisiting Rome and Pompeii…it’s been many years since last there (46 years ago when I first went to Rome and Pompeii)…where has the time gone 🤔
I'd highly recommend going to Trestavere for lunch or dinner. It was originally the more working class area of Rome and it has a more authentic charm than the center. It's buzzing with brilliant restaurants, fairy lights and buskers.
