With the visit of the Latics this weekend brings memories of the Dutch oompah band who performed at this game back in 96. They took up a position near me in the East Stand and deafened all around them for the entire 90 minutes. They were called something like Kleide Pils and IIRC had been organised by Henry Irving.

They were a good omen too as we won the game 1-0 thanks to an 85th minute David Whyte strike. And it was in this game that a certain Mark Kinsella made his debut as well.

Is that the same season they beat us 5-2 on the opening day?

    No, that was 1994/1995.

My first game but I could have sworn this was 95?
  • It was definitely 96/97, the last season we played them. The return game was fogged off with a hour to kick off (I went up on the solitary coach) and the re-arranged game was played in driving rain with Charlton appearing in the Oldham away kit. Brendan O'Connell scored a last minute equaliser.

Wasn't this one of the games Ricky Otto played for us on loan? The same year we had Jason Lee - we played Norwich a few months later and drew 4-4 after Sweaty got sent off in the first 15 minutes?

Didnt they start playing and it relayed across the whole ground as they were using microphones? until the ref stepped in and the microphones were removed, thats how I remember it.

Otto definitely played for us in the 96/97 season, no idea whether this was one of those games though Leroy.

That 4-4 draw was epic - half the crowd left when we were 4-2 down going into the 90th minute, only for us to score 2 goals in injury time. I think Lee and possibly Leaburn got those 2 goals.

    Correct, great game that.

    No, that was 1994/1995.

Was, went up for that - my only visit to Oldham. We were shocking.

I was there too - the pre-season optimism didn't last long!

I was also there (just couldn't remember the year). One of my first long distance away games as an 11 year old. I seem to remember Lee Richardson scoring an absolute belter for them from 30 yards. Although this memory probably comes from the end of the season video, rather than the game itself.

I remember a game up there in the 80s, think they had just sold the next football superstar, Wayne Harrison, to Liverpool. So there was a bumper crowd of about 4k and it was freezing cold with snow all around, and I think we lost.

That ground's f***ing freezing in the middle of summer. Wind whips through it like the poxy Antarctic.

That's why it's sometimes called "Ice Station Zebra"
  • Kleintje pils came over by invite from C.A.S.C.think Ben Tegg and Paul Watts had a big part in this.
Some time later a second invite was sent to them but was turned down by the supporters club as the band wanted some
    extra incentive included.

I was of the few who went up to Oldham when we drew 1-1 and Andy Jones missed from 2 yards out blazing it over the bar! I remember before the game a charlton fan getting nicked for throwing a bog roll onto the pitch! They had something like 14,000 there that night?
  • Yeah: Andy Jones missing and "blaming" a bobble on the pitch..........
the game was played on plastic !

That was the game in 1990- yeah poor old Jonesy eh? Gordon Watson got the equaliser that night, not a bad result considering Oldham were promoted that season.
