Warning Not To Buy Women's Programmes From Website

I recently purchased two women's programmes from the official website. Each programme cost £1 and there was a £1.50 admin fee. Total £3.50.

Received an email saying they were on there by mistake as the club does not have copies of them and that I would be refunded. Refund appears and is only £2. When I queried this I was told the £1.50 was an booking fee and would not be refunded.

I am awaiting a reply to my further email suggesting it was wrong to charge me for their mistake and me not receiving anything.

The two programmes are still available to buy on the website.

Technology and a bit of old fashioned Charlton efficiency. What a pain.

Yeah, that's completely illegal. You can't possibly be left out of pocket because they've fucked up. If the situation is exactly as you've represented it, complain and threaten them with small claims court if they don't refund you. Sounds petty, but that's an absolute piss take, and they shouldn't get away with it. Suspect somebody a bit more senior will tell whoever is responsible to give their head a wobble.

Subject: Formal Complaint: Unjust Retention of Booking Fee for Undelivered Programmes

To: Isabelle Rogerson, Supporter Liaison Officer
    Email: isabelle.rogerson@cafc.co.uk

    Dear Ms. Rogerson,

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction regarding a recent transaction with Charlton Athletic Football Club, which I believe constitutes a breach of consumer rights.

On [insert date], I purchased two women's programmes from your official website, each priced at £1, with an additional £1.50 booking fee, totaling £3.50. Subsequently, I received an email stating that these items were listed in error and are unavailable, and I would be refunded. However, only £2 was refunded, with the £1.50 booking fee retained.

Charging a booking fee for items that cannot be delivered due to the club's error is unacceptable. No goods or services were provided, yet a portion of my payment was withheld. This practice not only lacks fairness but may also contravene consumer protection laws.

Furthermore, it's concerning that these programmes remain available for purchase on your website, potentially misleading other customers.

I request the immediate refund of the outstanding £1.50. Should this matter not be resolved within 7 days, I will escalate the issue by:

I hope for a prompt and fair resolution to this matter.

    Sincerely,
    [Your Full Name]

I am disproportionately pissed off about this @Carl Leaburn.  It's "only" £1.50, but it's just so wrong, and stupid on so many levels.  I hope the email above proves useful in some way.

Computer says no situation. The club does it with ticket refunds (for postponed games) too, which is also unreasonable. I believe (but don’t know) that the booking fee is a contractual payment to the supplier when they had to replace the previous system (which was not fit for purpose) and RD chose to pass the cost on to fans for the club’s error. But it’s clearly wrong in law and practice to withhold a booking fee for no service.

Just put the payment into dispute, you’ll get the money back

Agreed. If anyone could be bothered enough for £1.50. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If this happens to lots of people then it would be more than £1.50 and could be construed as fraud.

The actual amount isn't the point though.

But it's not just the OP that is losing out is it. I'd imagine that the total level of fraud based on on-line purchases of non existent women's programmes could be as high as £4.50.

Quite possibly one of the most Charlton threads ever.

Hmm, I think they must have caught hundreds of us today in the £1.50 racket.
I had to make 2 separate purchases as our S/T seats were unavailable @11.30am, so had to wait until they were (like loads of others).

We wanted to renew season tickets last week, but to move slightly. Computer said no, so i called the ticket office. Very quick, helpful ans easily done. Still massively annoyed me that on purchases over £600 they applied a booking fee.

Might not sound a lot, but if they done that with 10 people, that's £15.

Common sense did prevail in the end and I received a call from Charlton over the weekend to advise I will be getting the fee refunded. It just should never have been handled how it was.
