Alex Gilbert - Sept 2025 still at Middlesbrough

I thought that he looked quality today, all be it against a weak side in Burton. I would like to have seen more of him since signing for us. I think he has the potential to be a decent Championship player.9
-
Has that killer pass ability, and offers something different to Berry. Happy he had a very good match today. Needs to improve on his off the ball game, if he does that will flourish in Championship

Definitely prefer him to Anderson, think he's been a bit unlucky not to get a bit more game time here, although understand why given the run we've had.5
-
Couple of occasions he totally failed to press his man, can see why Anderson is used for that. His dead ball delivery and passing is very very good though and he's been unlucky not to score7
-
Yeah very good today3

Important that Gilbert not only played well on the ball with his passing range but he also got 85 minutes in the bank. IF Berry isn't fit then Gilbert and Anderson will share game time with Karoy possibly starting ahead of Alex but he can still have import minutes to play in the semi finals and hopefully on the big pitch at Wembley which will suit his game.

Hope Bez is fit bit if not then I think Karoy for the away leg and Gilbert for the home leg.soapboxsam said:Important that Gilbert not only played well on the ball with his passing range but he also got 85 minutes in the bank. He's a good player ,perfect replacement for Berry in that role. Bit puzzling we've used Anderson there at times instead4

Anderson seems to give us that energy to close down a tiring team in the second half. I'm sure he'll get better starting a game with more experience. Think Gilbert had more composure for first half and better in forward positionsBigRedEvil said:He's a good player ,perfect replacement for Berry in that role. Gilbert to start, Anderson much better off the bench at the moment. Thought Gilbert was very good today.6

Very good player but one of those you can't rely on to do the dirty work. Not a negative but just means you need to have a team around him that means he doesn't have too.1

You could say exactly the same about Berry.DRAddick said:Very good player but one of those you can't rely on to do the dirty work. Not a negative but just means you need to have a team around him that means he doesn't have too.1 -
Karoy ahead of Gilbert, on todays showing Gilbert is miles bettersoapboxsam said:Important that Gilbert not only played well on the ball with his passing range but he also got 85 minutes in the bank. I think Berry's better at it than Gilbert. While he won't charge around like Anderson and you wouldn't want him in a deeper midfield role with more defensive responsibility, he does join TC and Godden in the high press where he tries to get tackles in and he challenges in the air.carly burn said:

Gilbert's biggest weakness is his physicality...
Doesn't win many tackles, and never jumps to win a header. Considering how tall he is, a major weakness in his game.
Quite a bit behind Berry for a starting berth, IMO.7 -
I thought he looked lost for the first 15-20 minutes, but grew into the game, turning what started as a 5 ranking into a solid 8. I don't think there's any argument over his ability, but more a case of is he the right style of player for NJ's team? I'm hoping Berry is back for the play-offs, but if not, I'd personally rather see AG in that role than KA, who I see more as a box-to-box player, than a 10.2

He got involved a lot more than Berry does and his passing broke them open a number of times. Good player, don't know why he hasn't started more.3

….and as for some of those passes!5 -
If NJ believes he can train the physicality and positional awareness into him that his needed to be starting midfielder in this team then I would try to sign him. He won’t start regularly for NJ unless he can show those things. That’s why he hasn’t started more despite having more creative spark than either Anderson or Berry. He was given time and space today and influenced the game accordingly, he won’t get that to the same extent in the playoffs.Hal1x said:Should we sign him?, or only if we dont go up?
Also, Berry has really given no reason to be dropped since Gilbert arrived And in defence of Anderson, he scored vs. Wycombe and showed some skill and creativity of his own for the chance where Fullah hit the bar.5 -
In a more open, lower intensity end of the season game when both teams had nothing to play for. He wouldn’t have done the same in a match like Stockport away, for example.Chunes said:He got involved a lot more than Berry does and his passing broke them open a number of times. Fraseresque in that he's technically very good but not sure he has the agression and defensive side to his game that NJ expects.DRAddick said:Very good player but one of those you can't rely on to do the dirty work. Enjoyed watching him yesterday.2 -
Technically very good but probably needs to put more muscle on3

Disagree. Watch the Orient extra time again. He doesn't just take the corners, he wins the ball in midfield.Henry Irving said:

Cant argue with the quality of his passing. I am concerned how generally weak he seems though and pulled out of a couple of winnable challenges in second half yesterday. Get away with that against Burton who were generally poor at finishing, could be different situation in play offs though.2
-
Yeah, no doubt. But he's a different type of player to Berry, and in the more open games, think he might have offered a little bit more.Scoham said:

Can see him getting absolutely eaten alive in midfield against a team like Stockport, hopefully Berry is back3
-
Not saying he never puts a tackle in but I'm not yet convinced that that is a strength of his game. And we know NJ values that aspect highly.Cloudworm said:
