Pope Francis - RIP

  • Personally not a fan of religion of any kind and the Catholic church in particular. But he was as good a Pope as you could get, he lived the key values of Jesus' teaching that much of modern Christianity just ignores - showing kindness and love to all, inclusivity, caring for the poor, fighting for the marginalised, fighting injustice, welcoming immigrants. He used his platform to speak these truths to those in power and call out injustice where he saw it. For that he got my respect. RIP

I expect we will get a "traditionalist" Pope next that ignores those key principles of Jesus teachings. Will likely spread hate instead of love as much of modern christianity does, will be worse for marginalised groups such as LGBTQ people. The world will be a much worse place for it.
It is interesting that you think that. I was surprised to find out that Pope Francis himself has appointed 80% of the elector Cardinals eligible to vote in Conclave (108 of 135).

That does not mean a pope sharing Pope Francis' progressive views will be appointed but it will likely make it difficult for eg one of the vehemently opposed to any form of LGBTQ cardinals from eg the African branches of the catholic church to be appointed.

Interesting. A few things I've read were suggesting that outside political influence might innsome way affect it but here's hoping we get another like Pope Francis.
  • Cardinals gather in the Pauline Chapel before they head to the Sistine to form a conclave.  (From 2013).

    RIP.

  • In the modern world I know that people like ‘influencers’ on the internet.
In the past religions have been influencers, and still influence hundreds of millions today.
It looks like a short cut to avoid thinking for yourself a lot of the time, but can’t be ignored or underestimated.
  • Not a religious person (any more), but goodnight Francis.   Thank you for all your work championing the causes of those with nothing, physically or vocally.

  • I’ve got a fiver on the next being Pope Nick.

Not sure where that’s come from though.

You have to question if someone with his levels of delusion should be allowed to hold the office he currently does. I never ever thought I would say these words but I really hope the Chinese bring their economy to its knees as I think that’s what it will take for the hillbillies to realise their error in judgement
Also with Trump being a convicted felon I believe ffs !! Have a minor mistamenor on your ESTA application and you might not even get into the US ..........

    Fuck off Cblock

    1. There is no god, no virgin birth, no heaven (perhaps a hell) he and his kind peddle delusions that negatively affect peoples lives.

    2. One of the richest organisations in the world but still asks impoverished to contribute to the coffers by guilt.

    3. Still a home for thousands of paedophiles and despite a meek apology, no international clamp down.

    4. From 2. above no obvious proportional philanthropic involvement.

    5. No female Pope. Are women not worthy?

    6. Medieval views on contraception and abortion. Would you be happy that your Catholic sister or mother is regularly fucked up the arse?

    7. All Popes live in absolute luxury and have all needs met.

    8. The next Pope is not elected by a democratic vote of Catholics.

    9. Privileged, entitled autocrats don't gel with normal people.

    10. All religions prey on children who are brainwashed before they have the mindset to make their own choices.

    Amen to that.

Pope Joan (855–857) would like a word about number 5...
  • Reading Gisappointed's list of 10 points (which I don't want to get into an argument about, despite being Catholic - we're all entitled to our views about religion), I was struck by how well they also apply to the Trump-worship that seems to have taken hold of part of the US population. Particularly the bit about how terribly important it is never to have a female Pope, erm, President.

I’m no expert but wasn’t there a horse once ? Now that’s inclusion
  • Pope Francis refused to live in the papal palace and repeatedly voiced the necessity of living simply. He was a breath of fresh air to a church that was stuck in its ways and needed some progressive reform

I hope the college of cardinals chooses someone that can continue his legacy, or at least someone who will meet them in the middle

This will be the most unpredictable conclave in recent history due to the sheer diversity of the college of cardinals. I expect to be surprised, and hopefully in a progressive forward thinking way and not a medieval traditionalist way

I think you’re going to be very disappointed with the outcome.

A traditional pope normally follows a progressive pope I agree. However with Francis creating the vast majority of voting aged cardinals and with them being from so many diverse backgrounds, I have no idea how this ends up
